The Vadda Ghallughara (Great Holocaust) is a significant event in Sikh history. It stands as one of the bloodiest massacres in history. The term Vadda Ghallughara refers to the mass slaughter of Sikhs carried out by the Afghan Durrani forces, aiming to completely eliminate the Sikh community. In 1761, when the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani was passing through Punjab after his invasion, he faced strong resistance from the Sikhs. During this invasion, Sikh warriors rescued Hindu women who were being taken captive and safely returned them to their homes. This act infuriated Ahmad Shah, who sought revenge against the Sikhs. When Abdali learned that the Sikhs were near Malerkotla, he launched a massive attack on the Dal Khalsa in 1762. The Sikhs, realizing the gravity of the situation, surrounded their convoy and prepared for battle. The conflict saw the participation of all Sikh Misls, led by Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia. The Afghan minister Shah Wali Khan inflicted heavy losses on the Sikh forces, resulting in the massacre of thousands of elderly, women, and children, while many others were taken captive. The bloodshed began in Kup-Rohira village and continued through Dhaler and Jhuner, finally ending near Qutba-Bahmanian village. The bravery of the Sikhs in this battle is immortalized in history. A memorial stands at Kup-Rohira, commemorating the martyrs of the Ghallughara, serving as a reminder of Sikh courage and resilience against oppression.
