Resident Spotlight: Meet Zahraa!
Year: PGY1
Why neurosurgery?
Growing up in a war zone, I witnessed the vital role of neurosurgery in alleviating human suffering. I aspire to excel in this field and make a profound impact on those in need.
Congratulations to Dr. Zahraa Al-Sharshahi, PGY1, for her $25,000 award for “Evaluation of Dorsal Myelotomy and Expansive Duroplasty Performed Either Without or With Autologous Nerve Graft Implementation After Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: A Pilot Study” with Dr. Farhadi!
After 50 years and 20,000 surgeries, Dr. Phillip Tibbs performed his final procedure today. He brought the UK
#Neurosurgery
program to prominence, was the surgeon behind the Patchell Papers, and treated thousands of Americans with his excellent standard. Thank you, Dr. Tibbs!
The UK Neurosurgery team recently coil-embolized a ruptured basilar tip aneurism and produced these 3D prints of the anatomy using our resident-run 3D print lab!

Dr. Jeremy Adkins, PGY6, teaching one of our medical students, Sydney, during an elective ACDF. One-on-one educational opportunities like these are critical to developing students’ surgical skills.
Congratulations to Dr. Maher Hulou, PGY7, on his Department of Neurosurgery Resident Research Award of $25,000! This supports his project “Improving Imaging of the Cervical Spine in the Operating Room: A Radiographic Wedge Filter Approach” with Dr. Ryan Holfer as his mentor.
Congratulations

The inaugural Ohio Valley Spine Symposium was a complete success! Thank you
@UofLNeurosurg
for coordinating and
@UCNeurosurgery
for hosting! It was an honor to have the UK Spine Team share our insights
With interview season upon us, this week we’ll be highlighting a few key findings from research published this year by PGY7 Dr. Maher Hulou. First up: the impact of preresidency research on residency matching in neurosurgery.

We were honored to bring the second annual Ohio Valley Spine Symposium to Lexington with thanks to
@UofLNeurosurg
and
@UCNeurosurgery
for their collaboration!
Dr. Maher Hulou, PGY7, published research earlier this year investigating potential predictors of fellowship and career outcomes among neurosurgery residents. Here are four factors his paper identified ➡️
The

teams proudly serve the majority of the state, including those without complete access to technology. Here's Alex Skidmore (PGY-2) reading x-ray films and formulating a plan!
"I tell my residents to keep journals of their cases, because that's how we improve every day."
It was an honor to host

Is a fellowship in your training plan? A paper by Dr. Maher Hulou, PGY7, concluded that research productivity and fellowships are independently associated with academic career outcomes of neurosurgeons.
You’ve heard the cliché, “It’s not brain surgery.” But for
@DornbosIII_MD
, it is. Meet this extraordinary UK HealthCare neurosurgeon and learn how he and the team at our Comprehensive Stroke Center helped save the life of a 25-year-old musician.
End of a great week ft. journal club, case conferences, and an open vascular case led by one of our chiefs, Chris Spears (with Chris Michas PGY-3)!
