I honestly wish I'd been given this intro to user experience research. When I first started sitting in on and then leading interviews, I had two mentors both telling me different things — "Stay on script" vs. "It's ok to build a rapport." Different styles, but both worked.
As I become more experienced as a researcher, I've come to appreciate the different approaches to interviewing. I wish "how to user research" books focused less on best practices and more on 1. How to hone your natural style and 2. What to be vigilant for because of your style
