In this horror-themed expansion, face invisible hunters, mad cultists, shambling undead, and crushing darkness. Capture entities in your containment facility. Conduct psychic rituals and awaken an evil machine god.

This is "Merc Game", one of RimWorld's predecessor prototypes, 9 months before the original RimWorld Kickstarter. January 2012.
I never finished this game - I didn't think the concept worked well - but re-used the tech in 3 other prototypes and to create RimWorld.
I'm happy we did something new with Anomaly.
Sometimes you need to take a leap and try something different to open up more surface area for the design.

It's pretty easy to design a game where the player just constantly wins rewards.
The tricky task is making a game that pushes back without feeling unfair.
Setbacks, losses, failure and recovery are where the spiky delicious drama comes in.

All trans character descriptions were written by players through our "Backstory in Game" program. I don't think it's my place to censor how people describe their own experiences. /1
Years of combing through player feedback for RimWorld made a huge difference. No intermediaries; we just read the forum posts and Discord messages directly. See enough data points and you can discern the trends pretty clearly without formal metrics.
I was continuously distressed at Meta over how few people in the VR org would actually talk to customers using the products, or even read the app reviews and user voice comments they had taken the time to write. Bold New Visions were way more popular than Fixing Broken Shit.

Imagine an RPG dungeon was actually real. It would be unbelievably terrifying. People going into a dark unmapped tunnel network where they mostly get torn apart, poisoned, and burned to death by hideous creatures.
Every fantasy RPG is a horror game.
RimWorld's 1.4 content update is in public beta testing now with cross-expansion integration between Ideology and Biotech.

When an indie dev says their project is "ambitious", it generally just means their project is badly overscoped and they'll never finish what they're trying to do.

We were hoping someone would notice Porkchop and her dog in their little hiding spot.
This is actually totally fine for a small one-person project with no intention of ever having a team, or modding, or more complex data.
One should use the most stupid-simple approach that's viable for the situation. A lot of code out there is overdesigned.

RimWorld 1.0 will have bridges.
You can build most (but not all) buildings on them, which opens up the possibility of floating colonies on coastal maps.
But, the bridges can burn down or be destroyed by bombs, so be careful!
I say make a core game fast in under a year. If it does well, expand it afterward.
RimWorld originally took a year solo. Then we expanded it for 10 years.

is what I keep saying but for some reason I always hear the "make games fast under a year" advice, both are not compatible unless you have a real budget.

RimWorld's 1.2 update is coming soon!
In today's screenshot you can note the crashed shuttle defense, jump packs, and a few other fun things for those with eagle eyes.
RimWorld now has over 10,000 mods on the Steam workshop, with over 1,600 being updated to the latest 1.2 release!

Players figured out that when you're attacking a base, you can shut down the turrets by bringing a sun lamp linking it to the power grid, thus exhausting the batteries. I never imagined this emergence.

Rimworld let's plays might be the most engaged I've ever been in huskies getting caught on fire in due to bad wiring in a cannibal colony on a the permafrost of alien planet, like, ever.
Take a look at RimWorld's storyteller concept sketches from back in 2013. Cassandra Classic looked like a teenager. Randy Random looked even more insane.
