@pizzacarb @ill_Scholar @trajan317 Not to mention, for many years it was exceedingly difficult to actually take the exam. I tried to take it during my junior year but the closest testing center to Boston was in New Jersey. I was fortunate that they had one offering in Boston when I took it my senior year.

@TheDukeGodfrey @eigenrobot 5 years is standard for STEM PhDs, so Trajan seems to be on the standard timeline of applying for postdocs in the 5th year. 6 years is actually not even uncommon, depending on timelines of projects.

@ill_Scholar @trajan317 As someone who just did the math PhD application cycle, I can tell you that GRE scores are close to useless, with many schools not even requiring them (Princeton included). There are so many more important factors in evaluating candidates for a PhD spot.
