The difference between Capaldi punching a racist and Ncuti having the reaction he did is very clear - the Doctor is directly facing such bigotry for the first time and can't deal with the absurdity of it. It makes sense for the first leading black Doctor to have this experience.

Amy Pond is uniquely central to her first series in a way no other companion is. It’s basically Amy Pond’s world and the Doctor merely exists in it. The Doctor is the main character but Amy Pond is the writer and they’re bound in this dialogic relationship throughout Series 5.

The way Eleven was never the same again after losing his Ponds struck a deep chord within. He's like a traumatized veteran, an open wound all the way through but still trying to be resilient. It's quite a realistic portrayal of how one deals with the reality of change and loss.

By the end of his era Matt Smith truly perfected the image of an eccentric old traveller with a young face who has seen it all. And I’ll always appreciate how 7b feels like an epilogue to his story, the story of a man who hated the endings. 1/2

The microaggressions were subtle until Lindy joins her mates and then it's blatant racism BUT that is also realistic. Racists are emboldened when surrounded by other racists. I like that DW is not subtle with the themes, forcing us to talk about it especially given current times.
