Interesting tweet. JP people are taught maybe = 多分, but the actual likelihood suggested by the words are different. Maybe = 50:50, 多分 = 80:20.
When the poster says ”maybe” to their English boss, they reply “EN maybe or JP maybe?”, to which poster says “EN maybe, maybe”. 🤣
日本人は「maybe=多分」って教わるから、結構確率が高いときにもmaybeを使っちゃう人が多いけど、maybeは本来「50:50」のときに使う単語なんだよね。イギリス人の上司は私がmaybeと言うと「Japanese maybe? or English maybe?」といじってくるので「Maybe English maybe.」と答えることにしています。

Translator tip: Translation dictionaries are useful but often misleading. They're good to reference but only offer suggestions and don't *explain*
An example: The word 清楚(seiso) has "neat and tidy" + "trim" as English definitions, but so much info is missing from that alone...

Very awesome dive into the the history of 月が綺麗/The moon is beautiful.
This phrase is always cool to talk about, as a translator, as it’s a wonderful example of how you need to take bold liberties to convey intended meaning sometimes.
I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk a bit about the "The Moon is Beautiful" = "I love you" in Japanese thing. It's origins as well as the nature of the phrase is quite interesting, since it's not a metaphor or a play on words but something a bit different.(1/?)

Huh. Just found out the proverb 恋は盲目 is different in meaning than what one might initially think. The literal equivalent in English is "Love is blind," meaning we are unable to see fault in our loved ones, but the Japanese proverb is about how love makes us reckless.

Instead, you should look to read more widely. A lot of misconceptions on J-E translated work comes from reading poor (fan) translations. If you only read poor translation, you will come away thinking Japanese is an awkward, stilted language and should be represented that way.

I see many translation takes against characters talking in a certain way (youth slang, accents, high register flowery speech) even though the setting of the story is appropriate for it. In such cases, the material itself is probably what is not your speed, not the translation.

People are quick to suggest this as an alternative to reading translations, but Japanese is one of the most time-consuming languages for an English-speaker to learn--and learning it won't even teach you what good translation looks like.

I’m more shocked to learn the official English title for the series is “Oshi no Ko”. You can’t capture the full nuance of the original, but surely NOT translating it is worse

Not my dumbass just now realizing the title of the manga "The Moon on Rainy Nights" (雨夜の月) is called that because you can't see the moon on rainy nights, but it's still there--just like you can't see the main characters' disability or romantic feelings, but they still exist😭
