Today, March 31st, is Trans Day of Visibility!
#TDOV
is a day all about celebrating trans identity, community, and visibility. It’s about centring pride and amplifying representation for gender diverse communities.
Today is Trans Day of Remembrance.
Today we remember those we've lost to transphobia and discrimination, celebrate our strength in the face of adversity, and commit to fighting transphobia to create a better, safer, and more inclusive world.

Inclusion is not erasure. Using inclusive terminologies does not deny or erase someone's identity, but simply includes others with other identities alongside them - but we see this used as a false argument against gender diverse inclusion far too often. (1/7)

Terms like "birthing parent" include mothers, but also those who might not identify as mothers such as trans men & non-binary people who can give birth. Including more people at the table isn't taking away your seat, it's adding seats for others as well. Inclusion is not erasure.
We're so excited to announce that Birth Certificate Reform has passed in Victoria! This is a huge step forward in fairer access to accurate documentation, equality, and recognition for trans and gender diverse people in our state!

Statement from TGV: “Affirmative care is not about ‘turning people trans’ - it’s about ensuring that those who are trans survive. Affirmative care is not some rapid pathway to instant surgery - it is a lengthy and rigorous process." (1/2)

Over the last several weeks we’ve reached out to politcal parties about 11 key priorities that impact trans and gender diverse Australians this election. Here are their responses so far!

It is unnecessary & cruel to turn trans lives into election campaign fodder. Transgender Victoria asks that trans & gender diverse people not be used as a political football or a scaremongering tactic in a culture war fuelled election campaign. Stattement:
Today is Trans Day of Remembrance, an annual observance on November 20 that honours the memory of the trans lives lost to acts of transphobia and discrimination.
Today is International Non-Binary People's Day! Not everyone's a guy or a girl, some people can be neither, both, or another gender entirely! 💛💜🖤

Today is the start of

“The FINA (International Swimming Federation) decision is disappointing in setting a precedent for exclusion of transgender women. (1/8)

Forms use "birthing parent" as a measure of inclusion, not to take away someone's right to choose to be called a "mother." The word is not being banned, erased, removed, criminalised - that is sensationalist inaccuracy. The form is being inclusive to a broader range of people.
In light of the Premier's resignation, we wanted to take a moment to recognise the outstanding work that has been done over the past nine years. TGV has written this open letter in recognition of this work.
It's disappointing to see a step backward for inclusive language on medical forms today. Inclusion is not erasure - so let's not erase inclusion. (7/7)
We're trilled to congratulate our very own Chair Brenda Appleton and Treasurer Sally Goldner on being awarded by the Order of Australia for their amazing work fighting for the rights of the
#LGBTIQ
community!
It's not just about trans & gender diverse people - inclusion benefits many. With the current example of "birthing parent," it can be useful terminology for lesbian partners with children, both mothers, but where only one of them may have given birth. (3/7)
After 19 years of tireless advocacy and leadership, our cofounder and Treasurer Sally Goldner AM will be standing down from her position at Transgender Victoria in 2019. We thank Sally for her tremendous leadership. Read our full announcement here:
July 14 has been observed since 2012 as International Non-Binary People's Day - a day to celebrate, advocate for and educate about, our wonderful non-binary communities.
Trans Awareness Week is held in the week leading up to Trans Day of Remembrance to help raise awareness of trans, the issues facing our communities, and the ways people can get involved to improve lives and create a more fair and equal world for everyone.
Inclusion is not erasure. Using inclusive terminologies does not deny or erase someone's identity, but simply includes others with other identities alongside them - but we see this used as a false argument against gender diverse inclusion far too often. 💖💙
Transgender Victoria is thrilled to introduce our new leadership team!
Brenda Appleton, Chair
Margot Fink, Executive Director
Rochelle Pattison, Treasurer
Son Vivienne, Secretary
We're excited to see our new team continue improving the lives of trans and gender diverse people!
We recognise ongoing media discussions of trans people, our loved ones, and our right to exist this week may cause distress for members of our communities. Free, confidential, LGBTIQA+ focused support is available:
Lastly, we must bear in mind that despite what is being spouted by divisive, sensationalist & inflammatory politics & media output, it is not trans people that are the threat to women, to reproductive and bodily rights. (5/7)
Update - with news of the IRL ruling on transgender women following the FINA decision, and with other sporting bodies reportedly now considering their own policies, TGV updates our previous statement on FINA. (1/7)
#TransAwarenessWeek
highlights issues our community faces, and committing to creating a more inclusive world for trans and gender diverse people!
Challenge transphobia where you see it, listen to + amplify trans voices, and help create social, medical, and legal trans equality!
Looking to recent decisions in the US, & broadly looking globally, it is extreme right-wing views that remove reproductive rights & women's consent & choices over women's bodies; those same views also attack & challenge transgender people's consent & choices over our own bodies.
Today marks the start of Trans Awareness Week!

All proceeds go toward charity and projects that support trans and gender diverse people across Australia.
In politics and in journalism, there must be less dehumanisation and demonisation of trans and gender diverse people, and more respect for our dignity, equality and humanity. Recent events show this needs to change across all sides of the political spectrum.
