‼️ THE FINAL BOW: A Matt Ryan retirement thread
Before the NFL Draft gets here tomorrow, I wanted to take one more moment to highlight the work of the
@AtlantaFalcons
digital, creative and comms team for giving Matt Ryan the send-off into retirement he deserved.
The moment majority of the sports merch industry in general realizes its female fans maybe don’t want ONLY a limited selection of bedazzled, v-neck, form-fitting shirts but subtle and stylish branding + oversized options will be a day to remember.
Kristin Juszczyk gained 100,000 followers on Instagram last night, and women's clothing has been the NFL's fastest-growing merchandise category for much of the last decade. The NFL should partner with her. There is demand, and this could be a legitimate business.
Don't know if you are the praying type or not but if you are, I have a request.
If you've been on Twitter here the last few minutes you saw the UGA photog get hit on the sideline.
I know her and she's a wonderful person and beautiful soul. Please keep her in your prayers.
NEW: Calais Campbell launches the "100 Sack Give Back" initiative. In celebration of his 100th career sack, Campbell is donating $100,000 to teachers in each of the four cities he's played in (Phoenix, Jacksonville, Baltimore and Atlanta). Click to read ⤵️
sooo.. uhh... just to clarify: Georgia Tech will travel to Boston College (1,070 miles) and Syracuse (960 miles), but not Athens (75 miles) now that the SEC has made its announcement.
cool, cool. Yeah, this makes sense.
I think the biggest question I have about the roughing the passer penalty on Grady is what was he supposed to do? Like I’m so serious. If that’s roughing the passer, what’s a clean sack? What’s the disconnect between the two? This isn’t me being a smart ass I am genuinely curious
Well, it’s official. I’m joining the
@AtlantaFalcons
digital team… and what a team it is.
Atlanta: I’m not going anywhere. I hope that news excites you as much as it does me. Here’s a little about me as well as what you can expect from coverage.
Just a reminder that Calvin Ridley probably doesn't see/care about your comments re: his mental health, but the people in your own life who could be struggling with something likely DO see it and care if you view other's mental health journeys through the lens of cynicism.
Marcus Mariota very reflective postgame: “You look across the league and a lot of guys in my situation don’t really get a second chance. For (the Falcons) to call me in and give me this opportunity to be a part of a young team? It means the world to me.”
Some personal news: Today is my last day with
@TheAthletic
While I can’t share where I’m going until Monday (and don’t worry Atlanta, it’s not far), I did want to say how thankful I am for the last three years.
The dichotomy of Desmond Ridder is wild. Falcons finish with 401 total yards. He connects on that perfect throw to Pitts. He leads the Falcons on another game-winning drive. Giving Koo a chance.
But then there's the THREE fumbles inside the red zone. 1-for-5 in the red zone and
Matt Corral said the Falcons were the second team he had a formal interview with. Said Matt Ryan is someone he would want to be like one day: 10+ years with a team, franchise QB, stats to back up an arguably Hall of Fame career. Added he’d be crazy to not want to learn from Ryan.
Didn’t realize until we were putting all of today’s content together over the last few months that Matt Ryan’s first pass as a Falcon was a TD and his final pass as a Falcon was a TD.
Symmetry. Poetry. Legacy.
Jerry Gray asked what Jessie Bates III provides this team beyond the stat sheet: Said Bates called a Tuesday meeting with the secondary (no coaches allowed lol) to go over Green Bay film. That was Bates taking the reins of their group game planning.
Like OK. He's not feeling well. So, I get not playing him. Don't play him if he's sick or sore. But then to put him in in the final minute when Cordarrelle Patterson and Tyler Allgeier have been running the ball so well? And if anything you need pass protection and you choose
Michael Vick texted Michael Penix Jr. this morning. Penix said he has a good relationship with Vick, he watched him growing up. Even had Vick cleats when he was younger.
The Falcons leading receivers today was Kyle Pitts (seven receptions for 87 yards) and Drake London (six receptions for 78 yards). Desmond Ridder said this game was really about getting the ball in the hands of the ATL playmakers and letting them do their thing.
Two-minute warning. Grady Jarrett is visibly agitated. Hasn't stopped pacing during this TV timeout. Looked to have pointed at the officials and said something to them at one point, too.
All justified imo.
Talking to Desmond Ridder, and he was asked about Drake London/Kyle Pitts' targets. He said there is a rhythm to the game and where QBs get in trouble is when they try to force things to certain guys. If something is working, stick with it until its not.
Arthur Smith said the reason Matt Ryan has been so productive throughout his career is because he has reinvented himself subtly through multiple systems, and that's why Smith thinks he's underrated.
Jeff Okudah got some very positive news after the injury yesterday. He has a great chance to be back by the early weeks of the season, per Arthur Smith.
As an alumna, this has infuriated me.
I’ve never said a bad word about my alma mater but this is lazy, UGA. You can make Election Day work for the thousands of students you allowed back in Athens during a pandemic.
It seems you just don’t want to.
Apparently the Falcons had a team meeting last night. A few players said it was very beneficial to have a "heart-to-heart," player-led conversation. Details of said convo were few, but Cordarrelle Patterson assured: “Just know we had a good little talk.”
Arthur Smith said Matt Ryan is "criminally underrated" and he praised his command of the offense. Said the turnaround after the fumble to come out and lead the charge inside the two minute was critical.
Something that I don't think should go unnoticed: Arthur Smith said well before the season started that a goal of his, and this 2022 team, was to be better at home for the fanbase.
With the win today, the Falcons won six games at home this year. That's a new record at MBS.
A quote from Marcus Mariota on Kyle Pitts that I liked: "Kyle is going to be open even if he is somewhat covered. You just gotta get him the ball. I think he does a great job - no matter what - of winning these 50/50 contested catches. It's on me to give him more opportunities."
Arthur Smith asked if he feels differently about where this team is at 7-10 from where last year's team was at 7-10, too: "Yes."
"You can feel a foundation, an identity, especially with this offensive line."
Really excited to announce that I will be expanding my role with
@TheAthleticATL
to include coverage of the Atlanta Falcons.
I’ve grown so much as a storyteller and reporter covering GaTech, but I’m excited for this next step. More details here ⬇️
Absolutely tragic and heartbreaking that Collins and Georgia Tech have had to release two statements like this in 2019.
Here’s Collins and Georgia Tech’s statement on the passing of Bryce Gowdy:
We are heartbroken. Bryce will always be a part of our Georgia Tech Football Family. We will be praying for him and all those who love him.

Arthur Smith said he wants to go back and watch the film of practice, but did note he’s really liked Desmond Ridder’s decision making over the last couple of days.
Marcus Mariota in 2022 after ATL's loss to CAR in Charlotte: "Tried to make a play too many times and it hurt our team."
Desmond Ridder in 2023 after ATL's loss to CAR in Charlotte: "I was trying to make a play and I tried to do too much.”
Two Falcons QBs, one year apart ⤵️
Arthur Smith said a "huge point of emphasis this offseason" will be in generating a more significant pass rush. And that goes beyond the OLB position, it's in the interior, too.
Impressive stand by the Falcons defense in situational work. First a PBU by Troy Andersen, then a near INT by Dee Alford, then an actual INT by Jaylinn Hawkins.
"You don't pass up that opportunity," Terry Fontenot said about taking Michael Penix Jr. No. 8 overall.
"Kirk Cousins is our quarterback. ... With Michael Penix, we're thinking about the future."
Arthur Smith said they knew coming in this was going to be "a big boy fight" and he always felt that the team that ran the ball the best today was going to win.
Well, that held true. Falcons outran the Browns 202 to 177.
Asked Matt Ryan if there was someone else who defenses took note of this early in their career like they have Kyle Pitts through three games...
He said yes. Julio.
Arthur Blank: "I do not think our fans have lost faith in our franchise and our ability to be successful at the highest level."
"They have not given up hope. They're frustrated. They're angry. I'm frustrated. I'm angry."
Having a hard time sleeping. Wanted to know more about the man we’re all talking about, praying for. Ran across this picture from 2020. It brought me a little bit of peace tonight and thought even if you don’t share his faith it could bring you a little peace, too, as we wait 💛
I am working on a story for tomorrow about AJ Terrell being one of the primary faces of the Falcons organization. Lol remember when everyone was DISTRAUGHT about the Falcons taking him at No. 16 two years ago? throwback.
Cool stat for you: Cordarrelle Patterson is the first player in franchise history to have five rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns in a single season.
Hearing Calvin Ridley say his foot "was not good last year" when his stat line was 1,300+ receiving yards on 90 catches is quite astounding. I - for one - couldn't tell.
Jeff Okudah and Cordarrelle Patterson will be at practice today, per Arthur Smith.
Smith added that Troy Andersen came in earlier in the week and wasn't feeling "quite right," so the Falcons put him in concussion protocol.
"I enjoyed the hell out of the year I got to coach (Matt Ryan)." Arthur Smith said it was great having Matt Ryan out at practice today with his boys. Echoed what Arthur Blank said the other day that Ryan is welcomed around any time and it's nice to see him.
I was in the locker room during Muffet McGraw’s press conference but I thought it was important people saw just a snippet of what she said when asked about her hiring practices.
Tyler Allgeier has 1,001 yards from scrimmage.
He's the third rookie this season with 1,000 scrimmage yards (Dameon Pierce and Garrett Wilson). He's the fourth Falcon to accomplish that feat (William Andrews, Kyle Pitts and Julio Jones).
Matt Ryan said he got some advice from some veterans very early in his career: "You don't own the locker, you rent it." Said he always tries to pay rent on time, and earn his spot.
Matt Ryan said he thinks the Falcons are actually a little farther along in the offensive install than in some other scheme changes he's been through, and he said it's because he is relatively familiar with this scheme.
The day Matt Ryan was drafted he brought a professional stability to an organization that was anything but stable at the time. Though this was not the parting I expected, there's a certain level of contentment I still feel.
My column on Ryan's departure.
