Special Envoy of the European Union for Afghanistan – European External Action Service @eu_eeas 🇪🇺
Joined May 2021
This is factually incorrect. The EU explicitly stated that Afghanistan does NOT have a recognised government. I also consistently referred NOT to the ‘government’ or the ‘de facto authorities’ but to ‘the Taliban’. I was far from alone. Listening is a great skill, Mr Jalal.
The important takeaway from Tashkent is that all the participant countries & organizations including the United States, used the term Afghan government in their speeches. The current system is a reality that cannot be ignored anymore. Initial stage of recognition has begun.

I am appalled by the public floggings by the Taliban of 14 men and women in Logar province a few days ago. They follow a serious backslide in the respect of human rights in #Afghanistan since August last year.

I am deeply concerned about #Afghanistan's frozen financial assets. But girls not going to school, women not being allowed to work, to provide services through NGOs, or to create and lead businesses providing jobs are another frozen asset. The interim government can unfreeze it.

The decision by the Taliban to dissolve key institutions in #Afghanistan sends a worrying message when it comes to dialogue, human rights and national reconciliation. All very much needed and in demand after decades of conflict and war.

I join the call by @SR_Afghanistan, following yesterday’s attacks, for accountability and an end to Human Rights violations targeting #Afghanistan’s Hazara population.
Today, more explosions rocks #afghanistan, striking #Shia mosque in Mazar e Sharif and again the #Hazara community is a victim. Systematic targeted attacks on crowded #schools & #mosques call for immediate #investigation, #accountability & end to such #humanrightsviolations.

I am deeply troubled by the arrest of @PenPath1 @matiullahwesa by Taliban df authorities. Mr Wesa has been advocating for access to education for Afghan boys and girls throughout the country since 2009, in dialogue with local communities. #ReleaseMatiullahWesa.

In our conversations, the Taliban have often claimed to defend ‘Afghan culture and traditions’. Why are they now sacrificing a rich Afghan heritage - varied and often colourful - by enforcing a standardised foreign dress code on women across the country?.

Yesterday’s attacks were deliberately targeting the Shia community and the Hazaras, in particular. Targeting places of worship is a violation of international law and risks fuelling further violence and instability in #Afghanistan and in the region.

The Taliban decision to ban Afghan women from working for the UN puts at risk the delivery of humanitarian aid, basic needs and services to large parts of the 28 million Afghans in need.
#Afghanistan: EU is appalled that the Taliban leadership now ban the Afghan women working for the @UN, who deliver lifesaving aid and services. Yet another decision that violates human rights and puts many lives at risk. My statement on behalf of the EU:

The Taliban announced ’interim government’ claims to be owned by the people. Arbitrary detention of citizens and disappearances undermine such claims and contradict their declared commitments to upholding human rights. I join the call for an immediate release.

I also underlined the need for primary and secondary schools to be accessible for boys and girls throughout the country when the school year starts in March - and discussed engagement with UN appointed special rapporteurs. Looking forward to our next meeting.

A denial of the rights of Afghans - women and men. An impediment to the development and stability of #Afghanistan. A violation of international legal obligations.
The EU strongly condemns the Taliban’s decision to suspend higher education for Afghan women. A unique move in the world that violates rights and aspirations of Afghans and deprives #Afghanistan of women’s contributions to society. Gender persecution is a crime against humanity.

I am deeply concerned by the civilian casualties, including 20 children, in airstrikes in the Khost and Kunar provinces of #Afghanistan on 16 April. The protection of civilians, in particular women, children and the displaced, is a cornerstone of international humanitarian law.
UNICEF now has confirmation that a total of 20 children were killed during the airstrikes in the provinces of Khost and Kunar in the early hours of April 16. In Khost, twelve girls and three boys were killed; in Kunar, three girls and two boys were killed.

Something that also upsets me is the double standards and the lack of courage and plain decency. Big, brave Taliban fighters turned into acting ministers, sending their daughters to get educated abroad or organising private teaching for girls, which is good.
