10 YEARS AGO TODAY Today, February 2, 2025, marks 10 years since our very first episode was released. At that time, we called the podcast Talking Tolkien. We changed the name to The Tolkien Road a few episodes later, as there was already another podcast out there with a name similar to Talking Tolkien (not sure if it's still around or not). A lot can change in 10 years. As a mark of how much Greta and I have changed, here are a few photos to mark the advance of time.

Thank you to everyone who has accompanied us in some form or fashion. It's been such a blessing to meet and get to know so many fellow travelers along Tolkien's road! Here's to 10 more years of this journey, and many more beyond that! The Road goes ever on!

Seriously tho... Canonize MABEL TOLKIEN (Tolkien's mother). She was the real deal. - widowed at 26 - converted to Catholicism at 30 and was disowned by her family - raised her 2 boys around the Oratorians - developed Type 1 diabetes - died in 1904 (before the advent of insulin therapy) at 34yo - left her sons in the care of the Oratorians Of her, JRR Tolkien later wrote: "My own dear mother was a martyr indeed, and it is not to everybody that God grants so easy a way to His great gifts as He did to Hilary and myself, giving us a mother who killed herself with labour and trouble to ensure us keeping the faith." And no other person had such a profound influence on the man who gave us the spiritual treasures of Middle-earth.

Pope Francis quotes a letter from Tolkien in his Christmas eve homily: "I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament… There you will find romance, glory, honor, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth."
