Devastating ice storm damage over parts of northwest Oregon from two back to back storms. This is the worst winter storm damage I’ve ever seen (in the Springfield area). Nearly every tree was damaged or downed. Power lines down all over. Pray for Oregon! 🙏🏻

🚨Life announcement🚨
I’ve officially been promoted to a Lead Meteorologist at NWS Portland! To be honest, I’ve been working my butt off the past 10 years to get to this point & I’ve dreamt of obtaining this position since I first joined the NWS. Feeling grateful & excited!
My girlfriend and I have been doing long distance for nearly three years now, mainly due to me beginning my career with the NWS. Not easy!
But... WE DID IT GUYS! She is moving up to Portland TOMORROW to end long distance for good. Somebody pinch me I’m so happy right now
We have gotten 13.2 inches of

in Bismarck as of 5 pm today. Heavy banding is expected over the same area again tonight, so another 5-10” is expected with locally higher amounts possible. What a crazy 3-day winter storm this is... in early to mid Oct!
Ok this makes me lol. I was briefing my coworker and he shouts “oh my god, sit still!! Your side profile matches the NAM sounding!” Why does it actually match perfectly though?! 😂
Fan boy moment. I finally got to meet Ken Graham, the Director of the National Weather Service (aka the “head honcho”). We had a great conversation, he truly is a great guy. He made me feel very proud to be a part of this agency. Also, he’s even taller than I thought 😂
Well, this snowstorm humbled me. Our “worst case scenario” was around 2” of snow. Even the snowiest ensemble members I could find were NOT showing upwards of foot in Portland but here we are with over 10” ❄️ . NBMv4.1 snow probs were at 0% for amounts of 6”. What an event!
I have some big news to share! I will be moving to Portland, Oregon this February to join NWS Portland’s team as their newest Meteorologist. My time at NWS Bismarck has been amazing and has taught me so much, but I am excited to start my new journey in the Pacific Northwest! 🌲🏔
Let the winter storm begin! Moderate

and blowing snow have already begun here in Bis. My drive home from work was extremely slippery with multiple cars off the road. It’s a great day for me to be flying to AZ, except I doubt my flight will make it out! Wish me luck...😭❄️☃️
Celebrating 5 years working for the NWS! I can’t believe how fast time has gone! Luckily I have no regrets and continue to love my job, our mission, and the amazing people I work and interact with on a daily basis. Cheers to 5 years down with 30 more years to go! ⛈🌪
My strange life continues, today I literally got sucked into quicksand all the way up to my chest on my hike! I stg it is just like the movies. The more I tried to get out the more I sunk in. Thankful for the nearby tree root I was able to use to pull myself out 😭
Today marks 3 years of federal service for me as an NWS Meteorologist! This career path has been amazing so far, & I’m thankful every day to be doing what I love for a living. The only downside? I now look considerably older compared to my pic from day 1. Gotta love shift work!
Had several hours of moderate to heavy sleet in NE Portland (162nd & Halsey), which has now switched over to heavy snow. It’s coming down good out there! East winds must be gusting to around 40+ mph.
@NWSPortland
This past week of adventuring with you has been so memorable. I grew even closer to you, which I didn’t think was even possible after dating you for nearly 5 and a half years. I honestly couldn’t wait any longer to make our love official for a lifetime. SHE SAID YES! ❤️
How many people assume the forecast shown on their “weather app” is an official NWS forecast? A LOT. Problem is it’s NOT our forecast, and when their app is wrong, we get the blame. For a forecast that wasn’t even ours 🙂
As of today, I am officially 100% free of credit card debt! From 10k to zero, but it took 3 years of hard work and always making sure to take OT if offered 😬
Hi Meteorology friends. If you had to choose a profession other than Meteorology, what would it be?
For me it would be teaching. But, I’d also love to be a chiropractor. Kind of random!
Is anyone else finding it literally impossible to go about their day? I cannot focus for life of me while Russia continues to invade Ukraine. Going to work, running errands, cooking a meal. So many people seem to be going about their day like normal, but HOW?!
We bought our first home together! Still in awe that we were able to pull it off given the crazy housing market nowadays. But hey, every now and then people get lucky. 🏡
Do you use the MRMS MESH product during severe wx ops? If so, you may be interested in my MESH verification study! One key takeaway from my study is that MESH often overestimates hail size in "pulsey" air-mass thunderstorms that feature vertically upright updrafts!
You guys, I’ve been a NWS Meteorologist for 2 full years now! My time at WFO Bismarck has been nothing short of amazing so far, thanks to a wonderful group of coworkers & plenty of crazy weather. I’m grateful to be a part of this agency, doing what I love to do most! ⛈⚡️🌪
My time at NWS Bismarck has been as good as it can get, we truly have an amazing group up here. I couldn’t have asked for a better office to start my career... thank you for making my time in the Northern Plains so memorable! 🙌🏻❤️🙄
I love hearing people say “I can’t wait for 2021, screw 2020!”
Who said 2021 will be any better? COVID, climate change, racism, etc won’t magically disappear when the ball drops 🤣 (but boy would that be nice)
Had to trudge through ten miles worth of deep snow pack (2-3 feet) and ice to make it to this icy waterfall in the south WA Cascades. It was quite the killer, but my spikes were enough to get me there & the snowpack was so densely packed I didn’t need snowshoes. Well worth it!
Don’t forget one of the biggest hazards with ice storms is what happens after the storm... the melting. If the ice buildup melts too quickly, you wind up with this. Large chunks of ice falling off trees, power lines, & buildings. Very dangerous stuff, stay indoors!
@NWSPortland
WOW! After weeks of heavy rain and now snowmelt, the waterfalls are straight up GUSHING today! Turn your sound on for the full effect. Sometimes I forget I live only 15 minutes away from this magical spot 😮
My gf finally moved in with me yesterday and we have a very serious dilemma.
I want to sleep with the fan on high. She wants to sleep with the fan on low.
We compromised for medium.
My life during quarantine:
-Go for a run or hike, alone.
-Cook food
-Work
-Sleep
My normal life outside of a quarantine:
-Go for a run or hike, alone.
-Cook food
-Work
-Sleep
Aside from the fact that we received over 13” of
#snow
last night/this morning and have another 5-10” on the way tonight, at least the
#sunset
was nice while taking the snow depth measurements!
We rock climbed down a cliffside to reach this remote waterfall, and it was well worth it! If you’re into adventure and exploration, I highly recommend visiting Oregon 🙌🏻
I’m just gonna say it.
TAFs in the Pacific Northwest SUCK! Constant visibility and ceiling changes. Endless rounds of precip. Erratic winds. Fog. Send help!
We successfully climbed up to 7500 feet on Mount Rainier today, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my birthday! We lucked out with beautiful weather and ideal snowpack conditions 🗻
One thing I don’t understand on Shark Tank is when someone walks in and says “we raised 1 million dollars for our business using friends and family.” How rich are their “friends and family” to be able to raise 1 million dollars?! Damn. I’d be lucky to raise $1000 😂
My girlfriend & I are both rotating shift workers, but there’s one big difference. She does 12hr shifts while I have mainly 9hr shifts. So she ends up with more days off, which means more time for her body to adjust & more time for a social life. Wish I could try 12 hour shifts!
Fun
#monsoon
weather on our drive from Tucson to San Diego right now. I am witnessing my first ever
#haboob
! Visibilities near zero driving through it. These are formed from strong thunderstorm outflow winds picking up plenty of dust & lofting it into the lower atmosphere.
#azwx
Nothing like checking the rain gauge at 5 AM at work and having to duck and run back inside after around ten very loud gunshots went off. The cops showed up very quickly and determined the shooting occurred a couple blocks away. I’m shook guys 😔
I spent my first 2 yrs of college studying Industrial Engineering, knowing my true passion was to study weather & climate. My professors, family, & friends told me I should never switch my major to Meteorology, claiming I’d never get a job. 6 yrs later I have my dream job at NWS!
Seeing this going around & thought it might be a good prompt & discussion starter.

What is the worst advice someone has given you? And what was your reaction/action to that advice?
We are off to Tokyo & then to Bangkok! Can’t wait to finally make our way to Coconut Island (Phuket, Thailand) to celebrate my 30th birthday, wish us luck!!! 🌴☀️🌊
Well, it looks like my time has finally come. Unfortunately I started feeling really sick today so I took a COVID test and it came back positive. This is my first time ever testing positive. Symptoms include fever, body aches, headache, sore throat, and a cough. Wish me luck 😢
Fun time virtually teaching this smart group of 5th graders about the weather! I focused on wind & wave patterns over the Pacific, as they will be launching their own mini boats at the OR coast to see if they make it all the way to Japan. Happy to do outreach during the pandemic!
Dreams really do come true 🥺
I’m officially a volunteer for the Belmont Goats! Come hang out with us during visitation hours, all 14 of them are amazing and have the best personalities 🐐
I’ve never had to issue nearly as many Flash Flood Warnings as I did tonight! Many areas have already received over 6” of rain, which plenty more on the way. All thanks to a favorable environment with a low level jet impinging on a stationary boundary, leading to storm training.
Well, the PDX airport is currently sitting at 110 degrees as of 2:03 PM PDT. This is the hottest temperature ever recorded at the airport since historical records began in 1940. We expect temperatures to continue rising a bit more over the next couple of hours.

Today I learned how to load up the AROS system! It’s Interesting to watch the advancements of meteorological instrumentation. I remember launching weather balloons manually at WFO Bismarck in the frigid cold. Now we are loading up a robot to launch weather balloons for us!
Who else is out there grinding on an overnight shift tonight, working an extra hour thanks to daylight saving time coming to an end?

Why would I ever bother with the stress of Black Friday shopping when I can just wait until Cyber Monday and do all my Christmas shopping while sitting on my couch eating Cheetos?
As a meteorologist, there’s nothing better than forecasting a historic/dynamic weather event & having your forecast work out really well. Forecasting something that’s never happened before in recorded history is always a tough call, but we can add a lot of value w/ these events.
Hettinger, ND has bottomed out at 44 below zero so far this morning... which is currently the coldest observable station on the entire GLOBE!

That said, models did not handle the exact location of the surface low responsible for this mess well at all. They pushed the low southward, but instead the low stalled for around 36 hours. Mesoscale banding of heavy snow set up right over the Portland metro and didn’t let up.
The ice cream truck has come to my apartment every day since the quarantine began, while consistently blaring a hip-hop remix to the classic ice cream truck song you are all used to hearing. I’m eating ice cream right now.
