In an unprecedented move, 237 family members and friends of prisoners who have lived on death row in
#Singapore
have rallied together to call for Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam — an intellectually disabled man who is facing imminent execution on Wednesday, 10 November — to be spared.
Rarely do we hear the voices of prisoners on death row. Our systems are determined to silence them so that we, as a society, can continue to forget that they exist. But one such prisoner, Rosman bin Abdullah, has written a letter that he would like to share with the world.
This is a photo of Kalwant Singh from the photo shoot the prison does prior to execution. Families are allowed to buy up to four sets of clothes for them.
This is Kalwant, who was arrested 9 years ago at the age of 23. His last family visit was full of jokes and laughter.
Rest in peace, Nazeri bin Lajim. He was executed by the Singapore state at dawn today. These are photos of him from his final photo-taking session, days before the execution.
Nagaenthran’s lawyer, M Ravi, is now arguing his case before the High Court.
It is challenging for death row inmates to get a lawyer to represent them and file applications in court at such a late stage. Strength and support to Ravi for going above and beyond.
#SaveNagaenthran
Rest in Peace, Nagaenthran. ❤️
If you are able, we encourage everyone who has followed Nagen's case and cared about him to come for a bit, in solidarity, to show his family that we stand and grieve with them.
Imprisoned for the first time when he was a teenager, Abdul Kahar has been scheduled for execution at the age of 68. By this point, he has spent more of his life behind bars than as a free man. TJC speaks to his family about Kahar's life.

While we are relieved that the AGC's appeal against Datch’s stay of execution was ultimately dismissed, Transformative Justice Collective is also concerned and shocked by this frantic, obsessive rush to execute a man who had just convinced a court to stay his execution.
It’s Human Rights Day. 5 people representing drug users, ex-drug users, their families and friends, the social services, health, legal and arts industries went to the Istana this morning to deliver their petitions for clemency for Nagen to the president and prime minister.
Thank you everyone who was at Hong Lim Park today! There were over 400 of us there demanding that we

Two executions in one week - Singapore’s bloodbath resumes.
On 2nd August 2024, the execution of a 45 year-old Singaporean man was carried out in one of the most chilling series of events we have witnessed.
With less than 10 hours to go before his scheduled hanging, his niece and nephew are appealing to the public to continue calling on President Halimah Yacob and the Singapore government to show mercy and stop his execution.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the application by Mdm Panchalai, Nagaenthran's mother, and Nagen himself. The application was separately labelled as "frivolous", "vexatious", "reprehensible", "abusive conduct". Is it so wrong to try and save your family's life?
Although death row prisoners are cut off from the outside world in many ways, many still try to keep up with what's happening through reading the papers and family visits. The news of anti-death penalty protests in Hong Lim Park in April has made its way to those on death row.
Hello 👋🏼! This morning, 15 people (in different groups) submitted/are submitting letters to President Halimah Yacob asking for clemency for Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam.
Here’s a 🧵 of an easy guide on how to submit your own letter!

We have confirmed that two executions will be carried out in
#Singapore
this week, on Wednesday (26 July) and Friday (28 July), including the first known execution of a woman in around 20 years.
Nagaenthran is scheduled to hang in Singapore. His family, lawyers and activists in Malaysia and Singapore are trying to halt the execution. Support them by spreading the word, speaking out, writing to your MPs, and signing the petition (see next tweet)
Terrible news that the
#Singapore
Prison Service has scheduled the executions of Roslan bin Bakar and Pausi bin Jefridin for this coming Wednesday, 16 February. Their families were given a week's notice.

Nagen’s mother, Mdm Panchalai, has filed a criminal motion. The hearing is today at 2.30pm at the Court of Appeal. The family hasn’t been able to find a lawyer so she will appear in court herself, unrepresented, today.
🧵 Many people think about harm reduction in the context of drugs, and it’s also been portrayed as enabling drug use. But in reality, harm reduction is rooted in care, dignity and autonomy, and is life-saving in many instances.
Yesterday, Kellvina and her mother Sonia were refused by Changi Prison for a visit with Kellvina's uncle, Kalwant Singh.
Kalwant, a Malaysian, has lived on death row in Singapore for nearly 10 years. Before Monday, he hadn’t had a family visit in 2 years because of the pandemic.
This morning, 5 members of TJC went to the Istana to deliver their letters and petitions to President Halimah Yacob to grant clemency to death row prisoner Nagaenthran Dharmalingam.
Drug users & couriers are hardly ever allowed to speak directly for themselves because of the extreme censure surrounding drugs in Singapore. Come listen to the experiences of Ram, an ex-drug courier, at our event this Say, 13 Nov 2021, from 5-6.30pm on FB Live.

This morning, a 34-year-old Malaysian and a 46-year-old Singaporean were hanged for drug offences. On Friday
#Singapore
intends to hang another two more. If nothing happens to halt those executions, there’ll have been 10 executions that we know of since end March.

In 2022, we published a report examining Singapore’s Prison System and interviewed 35 people with first-hand experience of incarceration.
Over the next 2 weeks, we’ll break down the entire report in a series of posts that you can easily refer to 👇
“Most public out there did not know that we here are mostly as a worker or a runner for drug trafficking and not a boss. (…) Its really crazy to think that we earn a few hundreds as a drug worker or a runner and we get a death sentence, no second chance no life imprisonment.”
(1/3) The
#Singapore
#Prison
Service has scheduled the executions of Roslan bin Bakar and Pausi bin Jefridin for Wednesday. We call on the people of Singapore to stand with these families and reject state-sanctioned murder. Halt these executions and abolish the death penalty.
We need as many voices as we can get to urge the
#Singapore
government and President to grant him clemency. Tag your favourite bands, celebrities, actors, singers, authors, influencers, etc. and urge them to use their platforms to call for mercy for Nagen.

THREAD 👇🏼
We are shocked to see confirmation that private correspondence belonging to 13 death row inmates, including (in some cases) privileged communications w/ lawyers, was forwarded by the prison service to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, w/o these inmates’ consent.
They are also calling for the cruel punishment of the
#deathpenalty
to be abolished.
The letter, signed by loved ones of 13 different current and former death row prisoners, is a piercing indictment of the trauma and hardship those on death row endure.
We condemn the state’s determination to keep taking lives in our name, as part of a ruthless and unjust war on drugs. We reiterate our call for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty pending a full and independent review of the capital punishment regime.
#StopTheKilling
The repeal of Section 377A was not the only thing that passed in Parliament on 29 November. The Post-Appeal Applications in Capital Cases Bill was also voted through, with serious implications for due process and the procedural rights of persons on death row.
THREAD 🧵
Nagaenthran’s Court of Appeal hearing will be happening tomorrow, 1 March at 10am. If you are able to, we encourage you to attend in support and solidarity.

As we have said before, capital punishment has never been about justice or the safety and well-being of Singaporeans, but about demonstrating state power so extensive that it can control whether people live or die.

The letter highlights how many death row prisoners, most of whom are sentenced for non-violent drug-related offences, come from the margins of society and need care, resources, and support, rather than violent punishment.
1/We must organise ourselves to imagine alternative ways of responding to racism, outside of relying on the police. We must build our capacities and capabilities as communities to transform racism.
Kalwant Singh and Norasharee bin Gous were hanged this morning in Changi Prison. Their families have been given their belongings alongside their death certificates.

The dominant narrative about incarceration is that everyone in prison doesn’t deserve our sympathy; anything and everything that they experience in prison is what they deserve. But what do we want for society in the first place, and does incarceration help us achieve that?
In

, lawyers who want to file for review applications have to themselves (not their client!) swear an affidavit stating that they personally believe in the merit of the application. If they lose that application, they risk being charged with perjury.

TJC has confirmation that a 49-year-old Singaporean Malay man was executed at dawn today, 26 July, at Changi Prison.
He has lived in prison since 2015, after being convicted of trafficking cannabis (marijuana). He was sentenced under the mandatory death penalty regime.
This morning, the family of Kalwant Singh, a Malaysian on death row in Singapore, was informed that his execution has been scheduled for next week, 7 July 2022.
Kalwant was arrested in 2013 for drugs. He was 23 years old then and has spent the past nine years in prison.

Nagen’s Malaysian counsel has been informed that there will be no hearing tomorrow.
Every bit of time that we can get to urge the Singapore government to grant clemency to Nagen is important. Please keep signing and sharing the petition:
I’ve been informed by S’pore counsel M Ravi that there will be not be any appeal hearing for Nagaenthran Dharmalingam on 30th Nov 2021. He has previously taken strong objections to any rushed date being fixed this week.
Nagen’s mother has filed an urgent legal challenge to set aside his death sentence on grounds that Judge Sundaresh Menon who dismissed his earlier legal challenges had also been the AG at the time of Nagen’s conviction, sentencing & appeal, & that this is a conflict of interest.

“Re-integration is often said to be the goal of prison rehabilitation programmes, but this assumes that prisoners from marginalised and vulnerable communities were already integrated into society to begin with.”
Norasharee has been on death row in Singapore since 2016, after he was convicted for drug trafficking largely based on the testimony of his co-accused. We've published a summary of his case, with important questions to ask, on our website:
There is a Tahlil ceremony being held for Nazeri at Masjid Al-Firdaus, 11 Jalan Abadat. Members of the public who stand in solidarity with the family are welcome to come and offer your respects.
