Former Windows head Terry Myerson once told me the goal of partnering with Qualcomm on Windows on Arm was to "get those f#$%ing Intel stickers off of PCs."
Mission accomplished, Terry. There are no Intel stickers on the new Qualcomm-based Copilot+ PCs.
I got this on Mastodon but worth repeating...
Fun fact about Microsoft Windows: if you type Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Win-L, LinkedIn will open in your default browser. This is an OS hotkey that cannot be turned off.
I know this reads like a joke but it isn't.
This is why the PC needs Arm. This brand new Intel Core Ultra laptop was fully charged when I went to bed. This notification popped while the display lid was fully closed. I woke up to a dead PC.
"Microsoft claims Windows 11 is better than 10 for celebrity gossip, weather, and stocks"
It's this laser focus on quality that keeps me on this platform.
"240 million PCs could end up in landfills when Windows 10 support ends"
Sure.
Or they could be repurposed with Linux or Chrome OS Flex, and we can stop being so freaking dramatic.
Dear America,
Do the right thing today and prove you can be better---much better---than you've been for the past four years. Let's make us all proud to be Americans again.
Please.
I love you but you're scaring the shit out of me.
Paul
Yet another f'ing ad I don't want in Windows 11, pushing a feature I explicitly turned off. This thing is basically just malware that can run apps now.
"Windows 11 is now automatically enabling OneDrive folder backup without asking permission"
STOP.
This has been happening since, what? Last October?
If this article doesn't mention that I reported on this ages ago and have kept up the complaining, you can just f$%k off.
Here's my guess.
Xbox Series X @ $499
PlayStation 5 @ $599
But ... if Sony somehow matches or beats Xbox price, Microsoft will lower accordingly, to $449, $479, or whatever.
Microsoft should kill Chat with Teams in Windows 11 and replace it with Skype, or Meet Now from Windows 10. Teams is not a consumer brand, and it never will be.
Quick personal note. Industry events like Ignite are always a neat kind of family reunion type thing for me. But I returned from this year's show with a profound sense of friendship, comradery, and love. I have never hugged so many people in my life. It was just fantastic.
"Microsoft Start provides news from premium publishers" ... was the promise.
The reality is that the content is from bargain-bin publishers and the "top stories" are almost completely about celebrities in bikinis and women's underwear.
Shame on you,
@microsoft
. This is sad.
Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard in October. Since then:
Number of Xbox Studios games on rival platforms: 4
Number of Activision Blizzard games on Xbox Game Pass: 1
WTF.
"Edge will soon receive a built-in calculator, speed tester, and unit converter"
Microsoft, you realize it's a browser and not an operating system, right?
To all you WFH newbies who feel compelled to share what you've learned.
- Don't. I've been working from home for over 25 years. Your 2 weeks of experience is cute.
- Stop writing about getting work done and just get your freaking work done already. Geeze.
Apple won't allow Xbox Game Pass and other game streaming services on iPhone/iPad because it isn't able to review each game like it would on the App Store, a spokesperson told me:
Microsoft: Welcome, interns, to Microsoft. You'll be put in charge of the Windows 11 user experience where there's no such thing as a bad idea and we challenge you to make Widgets even more terrible.
Intern: Nailed it.
Apple: "Apple Card. A new kind of credit card. Created by Apple, not a bank."
News: "Apple Card accused of gender discrimination"
Apple: "Goldman Sachs makes the Apple Card."
You don't realize how much you use Task Manager until you keep right-clicking the Windows 11 Taskbar and it's not there.
This is after a year of using it, mind you. Muscle memory is tough.
Microsoft cracks me up sometimes. For example, today I am rewatching the Windows 11 announcement while using Windows 11, and THIS notification popped up. Classic Microsoft.
"Spotted by Twitter user Mark Russinovich..."
LOL. Yes, "Twitter user" Mark Russinovich.
Mark is the CTO of Microsoft Azure, for f's sake. He reversed engineered the NT kernel before joining Microsoft.
It never ends.
@Microsoft
, I've been a Word user since 1994. I probably know more about it than most of your customers. And I cannot f'ing stand how much you interrupt me with this nonsense. Please let me say no forever. Please.
Not now. Not ever.
"Microsoft's AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says content on the open web is 'freeware' that anyone can copy or use to reproduce, due to the fair use 'social contract'"
And I say you're a f#$%ing thief with no sense of your legal or ethical obligations.
For all the push towards electric vehicles, I think we can all agree---now that you're all working at home as I've been for decades---that what we REALLY need is electric/silent lawn care equipment. It's overdue.
Apple should hold an emergency press conference where they can claim that "all smart speakers leave stains on wood" and then offer to give out free HomePod coasters to existing customers.
"Amazon is discussing forming a 'Rebel Alliance' with Slack and other companies to challenge Microsoft's dominance of the work-productivity app market"
It's not a rebel alliance if you're already the same size as, and even more Evil than, the Empire.
Compare and contrast.
Xbox Series X: "The most compatible console ever, enabling HDR for games that were released 20 years ago and doubling frame rates for many games"
PS5: "Play 'supported PS4 games with [a future] system update'"
"Microsoft ends support for Surface Laptop 2, no more firmware and driver updates"
Four-year support period. From the company that makes the OS. That has a 10-year support life cycle.
\sarcastic golf clap
"Apple's VP of Mac and iPad Product Marketing Tom Boger says Touch ID is more convenient than Face ID on a laptop since users' hands are already on the keyboard"
The users' faces are already on their heads too. Even when their hands aren't on the keyboard.
Idiot.
Cost of Android Studio: FREE
Cost of XCode: FREE
Cost of Visual Studio (Professional): $45 per month or $1199 for the first year and then $799 per year after that.
Which one doesn't make any freaking sense at all?
People have often asked me why I don't have a blue verification badge on Twitter. It's because I don't care.
If you told me that this badge would cost $20 per year for an individual, I'd have laughed and said I don't care.
But $20 per *month*? You are out of your f'ing mind.
Wife: "I was using my computer and it died. Can you look at it?
Me: "Sure."
I have no idea how to fix hardware problems. I press the power button and nothing happens. So I plug it in and leave it there.
2 hours pass. I press the power button. It turns on.
Yes. I am a hero.
“Windows 12 is everything Windows 11 should be -- and the Microsoft operating system we need!”
if it’s Windows 11 with no functional regressions, a consistent UI, no BS hardware requirements, no tracking, and no ads, you may be right.
"Apple TV is Coming to Xbox Series X and S"
I assume that Microsoft is making them send every movie and TV show it offers in for review and then charging them 30 percent for each.
