When I was eight, I ran for school treasurer. I forgot my speech and stammered out a few words. The kids laughed me off the stage. I lost in a landslide. I was embarrassed — really embarrassed. But I wasn't done. The next year, I ran again. I practiced my speech until I could say it in my sleep. The election was closer, but I still lost. The year after that, I ran for President of the school. Despite a history of losses, I listened to my classmates, and gave a speech that made them laugh and think. But I asked to be the understudy for the lead. The director didn’t care, so I watched, learned his lines, and practiced his movements. In a twist, the lead was arrested just before Opening Night. I was the only one who knew his lines. From that moment on, I was always cast as the lead. ****** When I was thirteen, my math teacher stood me in front of the class and mocked me for failing a third straight math test. I ran out of the classroom crying. I felt defeated, convinced I’d never understand math. But I also knew I was more than a few failed tests. So I studied relentlessly, and sought help wherever I could. Four years later, I walked back into that teacher’s classroom and slid a piece of paper across her desk: I’d been accepted into the #1 college in the US. ****** As a child, I developed a strange relationship with failure, embarrassment, defeat.
