Think it’s almost time to open up the unsolicited submissions. A vast majority of our books come from this pool. A decent amount of those selected are first time authors. And it’s free to submit unless you want to drop in a tip for our efforts. 2022 could be your chance with us.
Thirty West is opening for 2025 manuscript submissions on July 5th. As always, we want to hand-bind your chapbook or send your novel, stories, or poetry collections across the world. Guidelines are being developed, but we cannot wait to see your writing. More details coming soon.
‘15-‘16 Undergrad profs: you’ll never make it

‘18-‘19 PHL & NJ poets: you’ll never make it
‘20-‘21 Covid pandemic: you’ll never make it
‘22 AWP: you’ll never make it
And yet, we made it.
🍰 Happy 8th Thirty West Publishing House! 🎉

Concept: hosting a no fee chapbook contest with 10 winners getting $500 a piece, firmly bankrupting us. But at the 11th hour, moments before clicking accept, an anonymous person donates the entire purse. Says they’ve been a quiet fan since the start of our publishing lives.
Submit your best manuscript to our Open Submission Period. Accepting anything from a little pamphlet to a lengthy novel. Any manuscript accepted will be published in 2023 & 2024.
All details, samples of what we publish, & Submittable button are all here.
Alright, we cave. It is not Monday as planned, but Thursday and SUBS ARE OPEN.
We even went a bit more in-depth for what we're looking for, so make sure to take a peek.
Happy submitting!
🚨We are pleased to announce
@rxbxcca_anna
‘s chapbook, Blue Bucolic, will be published Summer 2019!🚨

Rebecca Kokitus is a poet residing in the Philadelphia area. She’s had poetry and prose published in various lit journals and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2018.
It’s hard to believe this is the end. After a record high manuscripts read and two lists reread until our eyes were bloodshot, we are pleased to announce
@covo_noa
is the winner of the 5th annual chapbook contest. COMMON ANCESTORS, arriving this July!
Like it when small press editors purchase, read, and uplift books from their contemporaries. In a world where it’s easy to be greedy and jealous, mutual respect and cross pollination is what makes the literary world go round.
Getting some magnificent manuscripts for the contest opening weekend. Just remember, any chapbook is eligible. The 20-30pg is a guideline but if you have 10, 15, or even 40 pages, we want to read it as you intend.

By the end of 2022, we will have published a total of 56 titles. It took a few years to get our stride, but it’s likely we can hit 100 by our 10th birthday in 2025. Thats our long term goal and we really want you to be part of it. Every sale, every reading attendee, we move on.
Another press closes. It’s a sobering reminder that this business/community/passion project is fragile & can change yearly, or even monthly.
As long as we can print chaps, we will likely stay open in some capacity. Just know that we count on authors and readers alike to survive.
It is our pleasure and honor to announce that
@giordkat
's debut novel, The Fountain, will be published by Thirty West in 2020. From the samples we've read, this will be exciting!
Are you on our wavelength?
Next week, our 7th Wavelengths chap contest begins. Prepare your manuscripts now!
We'd like to thank the illustrious poet
@poetjohncompton
for offering to be this year's guest judge.
Links and more details will arrive on 1/30.

It’s Lucy Zhang Appreciation Week! All this week, we will be promoting her chapbook, HOLLOWED. Blurbs, samples, behind the scenes pics, and more. On Friday, we will add some more copies in the Book Shop.
@Dango_Ramen
it’s your time to shine.
Look, we want to announce these last couple things before 2021 ends. Like really bad. But we gotta get to 4K followers. We’re following back nearly everyone, too. We’re on the cusp of some good things and new supporters are as cool as the Day 1’ers.
A small press is:
-Hosting a reading where only the writers show up.
-Selling a book where presales are counted on one hand.
-Getting random hate emails from people you don’t even know.
If you fold at the lows, don’t expect to rise very high.
Authors, do you feel the need to publish multiple chaps or books a year to stay relevant? If you’re a publisher, must you produce dozens of titles to stay afloat? Is the indie lit world wringing every last drop? Let’s have a discussion.
Heres the SHORTLIST! This emu trip has been quite a journey. Some had to return to the farm but some are plodding onward. Big congrats to the Elite 8 of our largest contest to date. Winner to be announced by Memorial Day or very very early June.
Rise of the emus!
Not really, just the longlist for our 5th annual chapbook contest! Out of 227, only 20 remain. We thank you all for your support and we will announce a shortlist in a couple weeks.
🚨 Presale is now live for
@giordkat
‘s debut novel, THE FOUNTAIN. 🚨 We read a killer sample of this late last year and it’s finally coming close. Releasing in November. More fabulous work from Carolyn Brandt on the cover!
2020 we published 6 chapbooks, which was our most in one year. For 2023, we want to match that if not increase. That includes limited editions & quality covers for all. If you’ve been sitting on a special manuscript, you may want to dig it out for our unsolicited sub period soon.
We’d like to publish more chaps a year but we take the time to format them, pace the marketing, use various types, commission artwork, glue/limited edition binding. Even our 2019 pamphlet series took a lot of resources.
Handmade shouldn’t equal heartless.
Giveaway time! TWO brackets will each win a large box of donated small press books. Rules are simple:
-Fill all 16 slots with literary figures, real or fictional.
-Title the bracket.
-Pick a winner however you like.
-Reply to this tweet with your completed bracket for a chance.
It’s time. Our most ambitious project to date.

is a currently untitled novel written by many authors. Bending genres and styles, November never felt so 🔥 Accepting applications for about two weeks.

Chapbooks? We have a contest for that. 8th Annual Wavelengths. Guest judge
@laughingyeti
Folding chapbooks for nearly 8 years. Not funded by a state art council either so you have to imagine it’s a lot of labor and $ (it is)
Had an idea to have a book and chapbook corp but seems like a lot of people don’t care about handmade goods anymore?
Revive the idea!
Spent a solid hour or more creating a submission category for this secret project after bedtime. I’ll be honest, I’m a bit worried the scale of this may be too much or rules may turn off some writers, but I really want to try this and make it work.
This is probably the first year we've had a vast majority of prose in a submission pool.
Definitely a record-high for long-form and a new surge in fiction chaps. Poetry is still hanging strong with chaps & collections. A humble amount of CNF & mixed genre.
Keep it up!
Every now and then, I see a book that’s coming out through another small press that was once in our queue. If it doesn’t work out with us, it’ll work out with another. It always works out.
In honor of our 5th birthday, we will be giving one lucky person a copy of every book we have in stock at the time. This may included limited edition chapbooks that will never be seen again. More details later this week
For those who didn’t read our newsletter, we’re preparing for two more major moments this year: open manuscript submissions with an emphasis on chapbooks and we’re having a Thirty West Day celebration. Both will occur in the summer, among many other things.
Down with summer...arise Fall of Fiction!

Thirty West Takes pride in debut authors, whether it’s a chapbook or the longest novel possible.
Since we are nearly all wrapped up for 2023, we may have to reopen submissions again for manuscripts.
Totally possible to break 4,000 followers by the end of the year. If we can early enough, we’ll release our last 2021 goodies early.

, trying to help us out??
With over 300 manuscript submissions in a month and a half, we have to pause submissions for the time being. We want to make sure we address all outstanding submissions in the meantime. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Our 8th birthday is almost here. Thirty West is giving/gifting a free book with any book purchase through our site. Chapbooks, paperbacks, and even hardcovers from our personal libraries. This November only.
Three years ago, we had our 2nd book fair at Philalalia. The first chapbook contest, first contracted author all happened this year. We’re so glad to have made it this far!
Day 2 of AWP starts now. Going to try and keep an even split of chaps & full-length books all day. Bundles and freebies, too. Sun is out, let’s go forth and sell some books!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of our authors, staff, readers, and community at large. We can’t thank you enough for all you do and for being a part of our journey.

Ok look, we love you, but we need to catch up. As of 10/1, unsolicited manuscript submissions for 2022 will be on hold indefinitely. Possible option for 2023 acceptances will be explored. Thanks for your patience, writers. Our readers are doing their best!

The fall of fiction is complete. TENTACLES NUMBING, a riveting novel about two Bengali brothers in Seattle, is here and mailing.
@laughingyeti

We’re allowing one more week of the special presale price on our site.
There are times we know we want a book in under 10 pages. Other times, we may read the whole thing and still deliberate.
The process has no stone-written rule.
