What happened today during World War II? 1940 - USSR agrees to supply grain and raw materials to Germany in a new trade treaty. 1941 - British parachute troops (photo)dropped in southern Italy. Britain breaks off relations with Rumania. Malta under heavy daily attacks. 1942 - Japanese land near Macassar in Celebes, claim Martaban in Burma. The SS Normandie catches fire and capsizes in New York harbour. 1943 - Russians take Chuguyev and Volchansk. 1944 - Day raid on Brunswick. Winston Churchill urges Harold Alexander to order the Anzio generals to show more aggression. 1945 - Russians take Elbing.

What happened today during World War II? 1940 - Sumner Welles mission to Europe announced. Erich von Manstein is placed in command of German XXXVIII(38) Armour Corps. 1941 - Genoa bombarded by British fleet. British forces reach El Agheila. Mussolini is informed reinforcements en route to North Africa. 1942 - Pacific Council set up in London. Japanese landings on Singapore Island. First air raid on Batavia. 1943 - Russians take Belgorod. Japanese forces evacuate Guandalcanal. Munich and Vienna are heavily bombed, along with Berlin. 1945 - The Colmar Pocket, the last German foothold west of the Rhine, is eliminated (photo).

What happened today during World War II? 1940 - Turks seize Krupp shipyards at Istanbul. 1941 - US House of Representatives passes the Lend-Lease bill (image). 1942 - The German armies in the Soviet Union are driven from Kursk, an important point in the German strategy. 1943 - Russians take Kursk. Nuremberg is heavily bombed. US VI Corps arrive in North Africa. The Chindits begin an incursion into Burma. 1944 - Russians take Nikopol. Day raid on Frankfort. The plan for the invasion of France, Operation Overlord, is confirmed. 1945 - Canadian Army opens offensive against northern Rhineland. Paraguay declares war on Germany and Japan.

Day raids on Naples and Cagliari, night raid on Lorient.
