It is my absolute pleasure to share “v5” of TMDb with all of you. 🎉
There’s an enormous amount that has been added, fixed, tweaked and re-designed. All while still feeling like TMDb (I hope!)
Give it a spin, I hope you love it.
After an insane day 🥴, search and discover are both back online.
Thanks for everyone's patience while I worked to get everything restored. My back and butt hurt... it's most certainly time for a drink. 🥃
Hi everyone! I’m going to be migrating TMDb’s primary database instances today so there could be a few bumps along the way.
This is the last piece to move in what has been a 4 month infrastructure migration project.
You might see a familiar face if you check out the newest version of TMDb! 😊 We're so excited for our friends' big leap forward, and we hope you like it as much as we do!
I’ll be performing some planned maintenance tomorrow (January 20) that will take the website and API down for approximately 10 minutes.
I’ll post an update tomorrow when the maintenance window begins.
I'm pretty excited to get this work behind me so that I can go back to doing some feature work. Not having done any since May has been killing me.
Thanks for your patience with this. I'll be sure to post an update once everything is looking good.
Good afternoon everyone, TMDb is continuing to have some issues with the API, specifically the search and discover endpoints.
There is an unprecedented traffic spike that has been hitting the API over the past few days and one particular service is not designed for this load.
Still working on getting the search service restored. We had an isolated hardware failure and are replacing the node. It's taking longer than we had anticipated.
If you’re in India and also use
@ACTFibernet
as your ISP, you may have noticed that you can’t access TMDb. It seems they’ve blocked us and we can’t figure out why.
If this is issue is affecting you, please get in touch with their support.
Just a quick update, I got half of the instances moved today. I'll be finishing the rest tomorrow. Best end when things are stable and finish up tomorrow when I have the whole day.
One of our backend services that powers aspects of both the website and API just went offline. We’re working on restoring everything as quickly as possible.
Please be advised, we have some planned maintenance happening tonight around 10:00 PM MST. It is expected to last 1 hour.
I’ll post when we start and any relevant updates as we go.
FYI—The SSL certificate on our developer site expired earlier. This site is powered by

so I don’t have control to renew it myself.
Until they do, your browser is probably not going to let you browse the docs. Sorry about this everyone, we’ll get it fixed ASAP.

@Likewise
is a great new app that makes it easy to save and share recommendations with friends and family. It’s been a lot of fun working with the team at Likewise, and I’m excited to see what you think of it.
Ok, we're back on for this evening. I'm looking to start this maintenance around 10:00 PM MST and it should last about an hour. During this time, the website and API will be down. I'll post any relevant updates as they happen.
For technical reasons, this service is not able to scale out like the rest of the infrastructure and under this load, it's going down and taking the API with it.
As a band-aid fix, I have disabled the search and discover endpoints. I understand that obviously this is not ideal.
Looks like AWS is having some issues this morning that affected the region we’re in (US-EAST-1).
It definitely affected a few of our instances so that’s why things may have been a bit rocky. Until things are all green here: we may still have a few issues.

2018 was amazing for a few reasons.
First, 10 years old baby! 👏
Second, look at that TV growth! Movie and TV edits are pretty much on par with each other. It took 5 years of hard work to make this happen and I’m so proud of the progress.
Third, none of this would matter if it wasn’t for every single one of you.
Thanks for all your hard work and helping me build TMDb.
I can’t wait to share some of the stuff I’m working on in 2019.

Oooof, I ran into some major computer issues (as in my personal machine, nothing to do with TMDb) and I'm re-scheduling this for tomorrow night. I'll post another update when I'm close.
