While Nigeria's lack of athletic success is a story in itself, we must also recognize that the modern Olympics is also a global cultural event; therefore, the country must leverage its pop culture. My thoughts on BusinessDay.

I chuckle everytime there's a new update in the Wizkid-Davido beef. Theirs isn't the first in Nigerian music history, and it won't be the last. Case in point: Chief Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister & Gen. Kollington Ayinla whose friendship was punctuated by a 20-year feud. Shall we?

SARS officials don't wear police uniforms, are heavily armed, drive around in unmarked buses and pick people at random. That's kidnapping. They murder some of their victims too. Nobody in government- local, state or federal- thinks this is a problem.

It took me a while to understand the Yoruba concept of ìlara. That people could be resentful of you, not that you did anything to them o. Just the existence of you grates on them to the point that they harbour so much hate for you in their mind. It’s a strange phenomenon.

What is this I'm seeing about a Nigerian journalist telling their guest, "You need a dictionary..."? Is this still journalism that we're doing like this? At the barest minimum, where is the decorum a member of the fourth estate is supposed to embody? Na wa o!

Lateef Jakande was governor of Lagos for only four years. Only four. Don't forget. Count how many Jakande Estates you know, how many roads he constructed and how many schools he build. In only four years.

Beyoncé knows nothing about English premier league football. Yet she was interesting here. You can tell she’s charismatic, funny even. Nigeria, let’s tell our stars to develop their personalities & be fun to interview. As of now, they’re boring AF

To be honest, I don’t know how Seyi Tinubu was able to hold himself back from lashing out this election season. He carried himself admirably despite all the invectives hurled at him and his family.

Barrister struggled through the year with little or no performances, and two weeks after his 20th birthday in 1968, he followed in his friend's stead and joined the Nigerian Army. He sang about it in the album Oke Agba (1980).

I hope Ms Kidjo knows and realizes that most Nigerians love her and respect her artistry, and that the trolls are a small, inconsequential group. She's one of us.

Motorbikes are banned in Port Harcourt and dispatch companies have to register with state government for "security purposes"? Could have sworn LASG tried it early 2020 and our people did plenty "anti-people" threads. I wonder why Port Harcourt and Wike are different...🤔

MTV set up an interview with an artiste. Didn’t require him to travel or move at all. Just turn your phone on. They did advert and ran it on their channel. Many times. At the agreed time, artiste overslept. Overslept. Sigh.

Dan Foster paved the way for all of us. His death saddens me. It feels really personal. This is terrible news.

Let me tell you guys a story about how a Black American R&B singer born in Detroit, who left Motown over unpaid royalties, came to reinvent himself with a (Yoruba) song he called Going Back To My Roots in 1977. It became a smash hit when the disco band Odyssey covered it in 1981.

Perhaps it was Kollington's age, he wasn't posted the war front. Barrister wasn't as lucky: after the three-month induction into the army, he was shipped out to war. The only luck he experienced was that the bullet that hit him was not fatal, and so he was shipped back to Lagos.

@mofeyintola Great observation. I think it had to do with the blatant sexualization the women had to deal with… our people can be rambunctious a little too much.

In 1988, Nigeria had a minor drought that caused extended dry spells. It inspired a young Majek Fashek to compose “Send Down The Rain.” The rains actually started shortly after the song was released, and it poured every time Majek performed it. Rest in peace, Rainmaker 🕊️

My son is 3 today. Like I say, he’s proof that God loves me. Because having him changed everything and brought the realization that for the first time in my life, I had something that was mine and something to live for. God is the Greatest.

When the Civil War broke out in 1967, there was a ban on early morning movements & gatherings. Wéré experienced a slump that year. Kollington took stock of his life - only a Standard 6 education at 15 years old - and figured that the military offered a way out of a bleak future.

So he told his friend Barrister - who was dealing with a different challenge of his own (his father had died and his education had stopped) but had a few years of secondary school education - that he was enlisting in the army.

The music bug did not leave either of them. They continued to make music and record albums. Eventually, Barrister got disillusioned with his desk job and told Kollington leaving the army to face music full time because the meagre salary they earned did not look promising.
