LN, 3-15-82. Jim Abrahams, David & Jerry Zucker discuss “Airplane” and play Dave’s audition tape for the role of Ted Striker.
During their 4-segment breaks (L-R), the white jacket and eyeglasses were transferred to each, then Dave. Never discussed.
One more thing — there’ll be an “official” announcement maybe early next week, but I was told I could spill before, so I guess this is what’s called a “disclaimer”:
I’ll be involved with Dave’s channel in some not-yet-fully defined capacity.
There’ll this saying that a son doesn’t become a man until his father passes away. At 71, I’m here to testify that there are exceptions.
100 years, 5 months, and 7 days. Dad did damn good.
Our last photo together when he turned 97, October 2018.
This man participated in a Top Ten list from December 20, 1994. His name was Jean Thelusma. He passed away yesterday.
Thought he should have some well-deserved love.
Just acquired from a long-time friend in the DC area -- 189 Late Night tapes from late '87 to I'm not sure yet when. All in what I believe in excellent video quality, all of which will supplement my own collection. Redundancy has always been the key.
The plus side: I always felt like a poser wearing one of these, a pretend-wannabe staffer. So I stopped. But now when I get mugged, it’ll be legitimate. Plus this was a gift from
@Merrillmarkoe
, so it’s extry spatial.
Folks have been taken with the John Candy Cold Open from December '82. So here's another one. August 18, 1983.
A reminder that these are little teasers for an upcoming compilation of all SCTV cast member appearances on Dave and what's available on Johnny.
Last night Worldwide Pants sponsored a retirement party for Rupert Jee in the Ed Sullivan lobby. I captured nearly everything on iPhone video and am processing for select screen captures.
Taking a long time; will share the images when done.
February 23, 1988. Dave's only opening announce on Late Night. He also did the opening announce on Late Show, October 1, 1993, when Bill Hicks was cut and Wendell had long left the theater.
Except for the revised marquee and that troll next to Dorothy, this is remarkable.
Sent to me today, based on a conversation I had before the lobotomy.
Stand up and take credit, amazing editor master person.
June 7 1991. Earlier in the week, Lassally tells Dave to get a lawyer; Littlefield & Agoglia tell him Leno's succeeding Johnny, and Dave tells them he wants out of his contract. NBC makes the Leno news public. Then this.
Count the watermarks. :)
I sent them the Harry Smith LN appearance because it wasn’t available to them anywhere else.
Ana I didn’t get paid, nor did I ask to. :)
If you are someone who likes to watch old Letterman show clips, you are seeing them because of Don Giller...a tireless archivist and fan who posts the stuff online that no one else is allowed to. He is now hurting financially. You can contribute here:
Someone in the FB/AFL pointed out something: When Seth Meyers began talking about the launch of the Dave channel to Dave, he said he was watching The World’s Largest Vase video.
Well, that ain’t on the Dave channel, at least not yet; it’s only on mine. :)
A correspondence with someone today. It’s not about me; it’s about this young man discovering Dave.
Doubtful anyone years from now will write this about Leno, Meyers, Colbert, Fallon, or even Carson Daly.
Early Saturday morning I received this email from a kind fellow named Ravi in India. He's 22 years old, born in 1997. With his permission, I'm sharing it here. I was so taken with what he had to say. He gets it.
This just keeps getting better. The Carson folks are ok with me uploading over-the-air Tonight Show videos (all of which I had deleted), as long as they monetize them on their channel, which they of course should.
Awaiting word on one other issue.
I’ve begun to work on something for the 5th anniversary of Dave’s retirement from late night TV. It’s a bit ambitious (many parts in bite-size lengths), and it’ll take some time. But time is what we all have now.
I spent this last week watching every Opening Remark from 1982, looking for a specific joke. Never found it, but I'm surprised this moment made it to air. From 11-16-82.
While looking for the date of the TV Guide that
@WOEPD_TV
posted, I dug out this golden oldie.
April 19-25, 1980 cover story. Before the morning show had been announced and debuted two months later.
The countdown reveal: My YT channel reached 200 million views tonight.
My first upload was on December 26, 2009. It took 10 years, 11 months to reach 100 million on November 1, 2020. It's taken 2 years, 7 months for the next 100 million. (1/2)
My Norm Macdonald story:
On May 12, 2015, I received a note from someone requesting that I contact Norm regarding help he was seeking. I was given his contact info, so I emailed him and asked what he was looking for. He wrote back:
After months and months of delay, all Late Nights are now digitized for the years 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1990. With 224 miscellaneous LNs already digitized for 1991-'93, 170 now remain.
I suspect this SCTV compilation will take weeks. There are 121 clips; I've input 34 for editing so far (middle of Part 4).
In the meantime, here's a teaser from August 13, 1986.
But no matter; just conversing with Norm was a privilege. And after I uploaded all of his Dave appearances in a five-part compilation, he followed me on the Twitter.
What a talent. (/end)
Remember last year, 1 of my RAID drives died, and with it lost countless files. That drive was a BU of another drive that no longer mounted.
Couple days ago I decided to try to mount that 1st drive again. Success!
Nearly all filed recovered and copied onto 2 other drives.
It took my YouTube channel twelve years to reach 124 million views. On its first anniversary tomorrow, the Dave channel has done it in one.
I’m gonna have a chat with my publicist tomorrow.
Hopefully it’s just the channel rebooting, but I emailed
@youtube
copyright to ask them to fix this. So we’ll not out of the woods yet, but a major step forward.
All hail Carson Entertainment. They’re good people.
The Dadz turns 100 today. Maybe my favorite photo of us, October '75, in San Francisco. Dad soon-to-be 54; me, 24. This was our take on the "Three Wise Monkeys" maxim. Since there were only the two of us, we went this way. Made no sense, which was the point.
Today a friend sent me a photo of her recent visit to Just Bulbs with its current owner, James, Sr., and his son James, Jr. On their computer, my upload.
Full circle and all that.
To commemorate the 5th anniversary of Dave retiring from late night television, I've put together a series of "first and last" appearances, the latter paying tributes in their own ways to the last giant of late night (h/t
@zinoman
).

First, thank you all. I'm ok until I read everyone's tweets.
Second, I punched out a eulogy that's for Monday's funeral. Then dressed it up a bit for my blog, if anyone's so inclined. Mostly for me.
As I’ve been telling some folks, in time I’ll realize it’s just a YouTube channel; no one’s died. But right now I’m bitter and heartbroken. Will consider other platform options later.
But thanks, everybody.
50 million YT views reached, and, as promised, my gift to you all. With immense gratitude.
"Project X" on Letterman, June 25, 1993
Commentary beneath the video.
I talked to the Dadz today. There’s a service available where he can get vaccinated at his home. He got Dose 1 a month ago (Moderna). No adverse reactions. Dose 2 on Friday.
Did I mention that he’s five months into his 100th year?
I’m finally beginning prep work for the Alan Kalter retrospective. A Mailbag batch from April 3, 1998, consists of segments with Kenny Sheehan, Tony Mendez, and Alan.
That’s when it hits home.
VM Names update -- 1990 is done. 98 shows to go.
In the meantime, here's the June 29, 1990, opening montage, created by David Gottlieb, 17-years-old from Davis, CA. It never aired again anywhere.
Cold open, Feb. 2, 1988. Dave gets his dream office redecoration until Biff wakes him up. Biff goes off-script at the end, taking Dave by surprise, and out.
Everybody -- your support has been overwhelming. I apologize for not responding to every post; it just became information overload. But please know I appreciate you all, more than I can ever adequately express. (1/7)
Penn & Teller's First Appearance on Late Night, June 26, 1985.
