the notion of science is all wrapped up in understanding the dynamic flow, maths, and mechanistic approach of nature from biology to physics to chemistry to maths, we are leveraging the fundamental concepts of nature and amplifying it, I guess, is not about who is doing better in this case, and it's not just food, there is water, air, oxygen, natural harmony, other animals besides human, and the idea is to we took the knowledge from nature, we should respect nature and not being a thief but a steward, and anyhow when we say it works best, its more aligning with us already!

It's so amazing and interesting right, how all the equations come back to biomass (/organic matter/carbon) addition, so regenerative practices like no-till are less impactful, until and unless an extra layer of biomass is added to the equation and like so many others, directly or indirectly all the equation is up to the input and output of biomass (and the in-between process how the long & short chains are broken, assimilated, and released)! now the only question is how you increase the input and more or less the in-between equation runs on thermodynamics equilibrium and first-order kinetics ! So, anyhow there will be physical/chemical/biological limit to the threshold!

from the paper (section 4.0): The study acknowledges that completely reverting to the reference state may not be feasible due to extensive agricultural history (Powlson et al., 2022). However, the purpose of the reference is to understand the native potential of the land and guide improvement efforts. The reference concept can be adapted to include management and land-use factors, enabling the creation of hierarchical land classifications for comparative soil health studies (Table 2). These classifications can set multiple attainable targets, each representing a step towards improved soil health (Fig. 8).
