The decisions these two men made two decades ago led to a chain of events that freed us from Assad’s tutelage & Syrian occupation. A former prime minister & a former minister of economy turned advisor that understood local & regional politics - & diplomacy - without ideological bend. They deserve better this Friday than a standard annual marker. Symbolic gestures give, at least, a certain impression. Joseph Aoun did so four weeks ago & embarassed Hezbollah with no special treatment. And Nawaf Salam delivered today, in discomfort, calling out Berri’s bluff. It took a lot of pressure for this to happen, but it paid off.

Let the Speaker fume, he already (& undeservedly) knocked off one sister from a critical ministry. If the other sister is abandoned by the PM-designate to make Amal feel more administratively & financially secure, you’ll see a short-lived mandate turn to no confidence & blunder.

Whatever happens with the govt lineup & acknowledging his clean record, honorable career & ethically-minded predisposition, it is clear Nawaf Salam is a transitional figure inheriting a new security reality for Lebanon, & not a transformative politician many of us had hoped for.
