An interesting third-order consequence of this new era of U.S. trade policy is that it may be a huge forcing factor for developing countries. If the U.S. market is no longer open, if aid ceases, if the leader of the free world turns inwards, then all the countries that have historically held the U.S. as their biggest trade partner now need to figure it out on their own. Capitalism won the Cold War. Everybody knows this. The U.S. is tired of holding the West. The job is done. Now it is turning inward. Many of these countries will hurt in the short term. Plagued by corruption, weak economies, and crime. Long term a few will figure it out. El Salvador? Argentina? Colombia? Bearish short term, bullish long term.
