🌿 What is Social Prescribing? Social prescribing is a way of linking people to services and support in their communities to help them manage their health. Health isn’t just about medical treatments—many factors, such as social connections, financial stability, and physical activity, play a huge role in our overall well-being. 💡 Third sector and community organisations are at the heart of this approach. From holding exercise classes to reducing loneliness through group activities or helping people with stress about money, these services provide critical support that complements healthcare. 🏥 How Does Social Prescribing Work? Social prescribing connects people who are accessing healthcare services to these community-based supports. The goal? To improve both physical and mental health. Across the UK, there are various models of social prescribing tailored to local needs. 📍 A Glasgow Example: Community Link Workers In Glasgow, Community Link Workers are based in GP surgeries. They help patients by connecting them to local services and organisations that can address their unique needs. 👉 Support can include: - Legal or financial advice 🏦 - Physical activities like exercise classes 🏋️♀️ - Art projects 🎨 These tailored connections help people access the right support at the right time, empowering them to take charge of their health. Social prescribing is a powerful tool for addressing the wider factors that influence health and strengthening the bond between healthcare and communities. 🌟

Great to be at the event today for the launch of the new book by our former GCPH colleague, David Walsh, and our long-standing collaborator, @gerrymccartney1. Heavily informed by GCPH research, ‘Social Murder’ details how austerity policies have impacted life expectancy in the UK, and combines overwhelming evidence with real life stories to illustrate the causal effects on widening health inequalities. Congratulations to the authors, and for underpinning research have a look at our website:
