Congratulations to
@CampaignerAbdi
who has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for the Bow East by-election being held on Thursday 12th September 🥳📷 🌹
This is the state of Whitechapel this evening - Lutfur Rahman’s waste emergency is only getting worse.
Residents deserve better than this.
Residents deserve better than Lutfur Rahman and Aspire.

TH Labour group looks forward to working with the new Mayor and his administration constructively to ensure that all the residents of our great borough are represented fairly
The Tower Hamlets Labour Group has written to
@Keir_Starmer
asking for him to call for an immediate ceasefire to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.
Great to have
@MayorofLondon
come down and support our campaign for

today. Every vote will count on Thursday. Make sure you use all your votes for Labour and for
@MayorJohnBiggs
.
The TH Labour Group has sadly learned of the passing of former Labour Councillor and Mayoress, Beatty Orwell.
Born in 1917, before women's suffrage, Beatty marched against Mosely's Fascist blackshirts at the Battle of Cable Street.
She served as a Councillor 1972-82.
Today Tower Hamlets Labour Councillors visited parliament to hand deliver our letter to Sir Keir Starmer. We met with Rushanara Ali MP who wanted to hear our concerns and provide us a briefing on what she and others are currently doing in parliament…
On this
#IWD
we celebrate our excellent Labour councillors in Tower Hamlets.
They work tirelessly in opposition to represent their residents in a Council where every Cabinet post, Committee Chair and Speaker of the Borough are positions held by men.
The fight is not yet won.
We are proud of our 50 new school streets which have made walking, cycling and scooting to school safer and easier. Pollution has reduced by 30% near schools. We will introduce more school streets, including at secondary schools.
NEW: 💯 achievements from your Labour Mayor
@MayorJohnBiggs
and Labour Council. Including:
🏠 Delivering 1000s of new homes
👷🏽♀️ Supporting residents into jobs and training
👶🏼 Giving our children the best start in life
🌳Improving our local environment
We want Tower Hamlets to be a borough full of opportunities for all. Today and tomorrow we’ll be sharing some of the work we have been doing to make this a reality: Tackling poverty, supporting our young people and helping residents into work
#onyourside
Great to see the iconic York Hall swimming pool has reopened again thanks to the capital investment of £1.1m agreed by the previous
@TH_Labour
administration.
Another example of investment we made in our parks and leisure services.
Perfect weather for a swim in this heat!
“I used to study for my A-levels at the Idea Store in Bow. We know how important it is to provide a quiet space to study for our youngsters. We’ve kept all our libraries and Idea Stores open and are even investing in improvements. That’s the difference Labour makes.
#onyourside
As a parent I know what a difference our Children’s Centres make for parents and their families. I’m proud to support Labour, who have protected and kept open every one of our 12 Children’s Centres, despite the cuts to local funding by the Tory Government.
To encourage sustainable travel we will:
🚲 install secure storage for 1,200 bikes
🔋add more than 1,500 electric charging points to streets across the borough, with another 2,000 in other locations
🚍 take action on congestion points for buses.
We are shocked and saddened by the news from Southend West today. An attack on any elected representative is an attack on our democracy. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of David Amess and as a mark of respect we have suspended all campaigning and surgeries.
Not only is Labour building new council homes but we are also naming them to reflect our local heritage and diversity. Like Altab Ali House in Wapping and Sarah Chapman House in Bow. Labour will always celebrate and recognise that our diversity is our strength.
#OneEastEnd
Our first Weavers candidate is Cllr. Asma Islam:
~Cabinet member for Environment and Planning
~London Labour regional board member
~Cat lover
To read more on Asma’s record visit:
It’s disgraceful aspire amendment wants to rip out the school street.
Safety of our children should be at the forefront everyone’s mind.
Shame that the
@TowerHamletsNow
Mayor remained silent on a debate which affects our children’s health.
A vote for Labour on 5 May is a vote to:
👦🏾protect free school meals for all primary children
🧾provide extra support with energy bills with more funding for our resident support scheme
💷support thousands of families and pensioners with council tax discounts
The last time a General Election was held in July, Clement Attlee was returned as MP for the former constituency of Limehouse.
The other title he held following the 1945 General Election was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
We know the importance of libraries and Idea Stores to residents. That’s why - despite Tory cuts - we have kept them all open, offering a range of services:
📚book loaning services
🖥 internet access
📑 study spaces
🎨 activities for children
#onyourside
To make our borough greener we will:
🌳plant 1,000 more street trees
🦉install 500 bird and bat boxes and hedgehog homes
🐝support bee friendly infrastructure
🚣♀️improve links between green spaces and water spaces
🚲 support new cycling infrastructure
“As a private renter, I've struggled with insecure tenancies, AWOL estate agents and landlords who are happy to take the rent, but less happy to do repairs. Private renters need the council to be on our side. I'm really pleased that my Labour Council is.”
We have raised the language used in this thread with officers from the council - this is not the Aspire account but a Corporate communications channel which is meant to be apolitical, something that the Mayor and TH should know all too well from past mistakes.
@TowerHamletsNow
Our great local schools provide a strong foundation for our children to be successful. We will continue to support schools to deliver the highest educational standards, together with enriching opportunities for our youngsters, widening their horizons.
We’re working to make our borough a cleaner, greener place:
🌳1,000 street trees planted
🏫50 new school streets delivered
🚲Supporting cycle safety
💡More energy efficient street lighting
🚗150 new electric vehicle charging points
🧹 High street clean ups

We provide free school meals for all primary school pupils, saving families over £450 per child per year. We are one of only a few councils that fund this. We do it so every child gets a hot, healthy meal every day.
The ongoing violence in Palestine and Israel remains of critical importance to residents in Tower Hamlets.
Following the call
@TH_Labour
made for a full and immediate ceasefire on October 24th, we submitted the below motion for consideration at November full council 1/3

We want locals to access good quality sport and fitness facilities. That’s why we have invested £500k in Tiller Leisure Centre and have plans to rebuild St George’s, refurbish Wapping Sports Centre and invest £3m in improvements to other leisure centres across the borough.
First up, let’s talk numbers.
Under Labour
@MayorJohnBiggs
Tower Hamlets has delivered nearly 7,000 affordable homes. The council itself has delivered 1,000 additional council homes. But that’s not all. We have a plan to deliver another 1,000 as well as 4,500 affordable homes.
Find out how we have been delivering new homes for people on the housing waiting list:
🏗Building new homes
✅Using planning rules to get new homes built
🏡Buying back former council homes
Different ways - but all new council homes for locals - 1,000 in total!
Amy Lee is passionate about running for councillor of St. Katharine’s and Wapping:
~Chair of the GLA UNISON branch
~Attended university in the borough at Queen Mary University of London
~Mental health rights campaigner
For more on Amy:
The Tower Hamlets Labour Group will be releasing a statement on the events of this evening’s meeting.
Our councillors will not be intimidated or threatened as we work hard for our residents.
We’re helping tackle the impact of poverty here in Tower Hamlets by:
🍽 offering school meals for all primary pupils
📈 helping residents into work
📚 offering training and skills support
🧾generous council tax discounts
And much more

Your Labour councillors are in place and ready for this evening’a meeting of full council.
You can follow online via the council website or follow my frantic tweeting here.
BREAKING: Mayor Lutfur Rahman has announced a U-Turn on his homelessness policy that would have placed those without housing in temporary accommodation outside the home counties.
Today we are looking at the work we have been doing - and what more we want to do - to make Tower Hamlets a greener borough and to take the climate crisis. You can find out more in our manifesto -
Now let’s take a look at some of the new council homes we have delivered:
✅148 new homes at Watts Grove in Bromley South inc. 26 x 4 bed homes
✅ 24 new homes in Stepney
✅ 33 new homes in Mile End/Limehouse
✅ 20 new homes at Orwell House in Weavers
As someone who grew up in this borough and now is involved in youth projects, I know the importance of supporting young people. But it’s not just about buildings, it’s about a range of good quality provision that meet a range of needs, broadens horizons and builds confidence.
Over the next few days we will be highlighting our work on housing: building new council homes, delivering other affordable housing and standing up for private renters. Only Labour can be trusted to deliver the homes we need here in Tower Hamlets.
Good evening and welcome to this evening’s Annual General Meeting of the Council - we have started this meeting with members giving thanks to the outgoing speaker of the council.
A brilliant launch for our campaign to re-elect Mayor John Biggs on Saturday morning. Followed by a full weekend of talking to voters across the borough.

🎉A massive congratulations to our three fantastic Labour MPs for winning in Tower Hamlets 🎉
A massive thank you and congratulations to everyone who came out and door knocked, leafleted, phone banked and more🌹

And let’s not forget the new homes currently under construction, including:
🧱23 homes on St Paul’s Way in Mile End
🏗64 new homes across two sites in Bethnal Green
👷🏿♂️22 homes in Mellish Street on the Isle of Dogs
👷🏻♀️17 homes in Limehouse
🏠51 homes across three sites in Bow
To make our streets cleaner we have invested in:
🚛New lorries for waste collection
♻️Pilots for food recycling in blocks
🧹Deep cleaning high streets
And we will do more:
🚮100 new smart bins
📹Upgrade CCTV to catch flytippers
⬆️Increase recycling by 30% of current levels
Our first Bow West candidate is incumbent Councillor, Asma Begum:
~Currently serves as statutory Deputy Mayor
~Raised in the East End and lives in the ward
~Previous work includes improving our parks, culture and safety
Click here for more info on Asma:
Pleased to see that another Labour council housing scheme is going ahead, with 111 new homes for affordable rent being built.
This scheme was approved by the previous Labour administration in December 2021.
1/ I am delighted to announce that over 400 new council homes have been given the green light in Stepney.
The new development includes communal gardens, bike storage & recycling facilities.
Delivering genuinely affordable homes is and always will be one of my top priorities.
We are deeply disturbed by the reported transphobic incident that took place on Whitechapel High Street
We stand in solidarity with the victims and commend
@MPSTowerHam
for investigating this as hate crime
Together we can create a safer, inclusive community
#EndTransphobia
Incumbent Cllr Eve McQuillan is running for reelection in Bethnal Green East.
~Councillor for the past 4 years
~Working in the council on renters rights and supporting residents impacted by the fire safety crisis
~Studying Arabic
To learn more about Eve:
TH Labour are incredibly saddened to learn the news of the passing of Suki Binjal.
Suki was a vastly experienced and well respected public servant, who formerly served as an legal officer here in Tower Hamlets before going on to form Lawyers in Local Government.
