Anyone who thinks “the media” plots Machiavellian global schemes should spend a week in a newsroom. Once you’ve witnessed news and features forgetting to talk to each other and Xmas taking us by surprise Every. Single. Year., you’ll realise we're incapable of what you imagine.

Hearing @rosaltmann describe on Today how she was told as Pensions Minister to ignore #WaspiWomen so they would go away is horrifying (although not surprising). Government massively underestimated the strength and anger of these women who have campaigned fearlessly for justice.

But this goes much deeper. As a society, we are collectively guilty of thinking a new mum who complains about pain is probably just being a bit pathetic. And we simply don’t believe women (especially after birth), when they say they are sure something is wrong with their body.

In 2020 I suffered a “car crash” pelvic injury. I couldn’t move my legs and was in agonising pain. In any other circumstances, I’d have been urgently diagnosed and treated. But I’d just given birth, so I was told it was “normal to be a bit sore” and sent home with my baby.

Postnatal care is in crisis. Policy makers don’t fund it (postnatal care receives a 10th of the funding of antenatal/labour care), which means maternity units can’t dedicate staff to it, which means staff don’t have time to give the care they want to give to new mothers…

Yes so much to this. Felt churlish to mention it, but bank holidays are absolutely terrible for self-employed parents.

Many self-employed parents cannot afford to take the day off work on Monday 19th September, yet schools and childcare settings will close forcing them to lose a day’s pay. Bank holidays are only positive for a select group of people.
