Starting November 2024, Kenyan VAT-registered taxpayers will see pre-filled VAT returns with data available to the KRA. While simplifying compliance, taxpayers must verify accuracy before submission deadline Input VAT claims will rely heavily on e-invoice systems like TIMS/eTIMS.

VAT was introduced in Kenya with effect from 1 January 1990 to replace Sales Tax, which had been in operation since 1973. The basic law was contained in the VAT Act, Chapter 476 of the Laws of Kenya read together with the Regulations, initially published in 1994.
