as a demon, it was everyone else. then, when all is said and done and he remembers where they started, it flips; he was the one to blame. he was the first misfortune in her life but his circumstances weren't his fault either :( he never knew love until ume :(((

and it's true that he may have once believed that everything would turn out alright as long as they stuck tgt. but life is cruel and random and some things aren't meant to be no matter how much u may want them. but who is he to blame?

how at the very end gyutaro's sole regret was taking ume down this path with him. bc he spent years knowing nothing but hunger and scorn and violence, was raised in it; of course he never imagined anything different for himself. the only thing to lift him from it was loving ume

just when i thought i was over the upper 6 siblings, i rewatch their backstory and i'm once again feeling miserable about them.... sigh. gyutaro wondering if ume would've been better off not having been raised by him, while she can't fathom a life without her brother

ume fights him v tenaciously over this however, and insists on at least a cake even if it's just the two of them and their cat. she has him sit down and make a wish for something nice, but he just makes a wish for her anyway

gyutaro winter bday & ume spring bday... ik they wouldn't have celebrated bdays during their time but. in a modern au i can imagine gyutaro pulling out all the stops for ume's, while he mostly lets his own pass by without much fanfare bc he doesn't like the winter as much
