So...something big has changed since we taped the
@nprpolitics
podcast yesterday afternoon (and I’m not talking about the release of the Comey memos). Welcome to the world Baby Gibson, born at 1 AM and weighing in at 7 pounds exactly.
I hope everyone is having a great Christmas, then tomorrow it’s back to work in order to Make America Great Again (which is happening faster than anyone anticipated)!
The White House is on lockdown. The photo below is the door to the briefing room. (I’m stuck inside with many of the press corps finest) There is an intense protest across the street in Lafayette Park.
It's worth noting this was sent 16 minutes after historically terrible GDP numbers came out and after the release of new unemployment data indicating first time claims are once again rising.
With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???
POTUS suggesting in today's briefing that deaths from COVID wouldn't so bad if you subtracted the "blue states." Those states are also part of America.
AP has called New Hampshire and Minnesota for Joe Biden. Those were President Trump's two reach states. He lost them narrowly in 2016 and he insisted he could turn them red. And he spent a lot of time campaigning there.
We have a LOT of work ahead of us, but I am honored that my colleagues in the White House press corps have chosen me to help lead the way for the
@whca

Congratulations to
@tamarakeithNPR

"He rigged the system on his way out," President Trump criticizing former President Clinton in 2016...for doing exactly what Trump did in the wee hours of last night, revoking his ethics executive order that banned members of his administration from lobbying for 5 years.
Being a White House correspondent is surreal. Last night, shouting over Air Force One's engines and Tiny Dancer, I asked the president to react to the death of Justice Ginsburg, and he responded as if this was the first he was hearing of it.
President
@realDonaldTrump
on the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: "She led an amazing life...She was an amazing woman, whether you agreed or not...I am sad to hear that."

It’s 8 AM outside outside the Amway Center where
@realDonaldTrump
will hold the grand re-launch of his 2020 re-election campaign. The band is warming up and there’s a party atmosphere among those in the (very long) line to get in.
Today my kid's preschool is having a regularly scheduled "hibernation drill." We got a note from his teacher last night saying that the kids put 2 and 2 together and realized it was really an active shooter drill and then on their own connected it to Parkland. Ugh.
Sharing here that my grandmother Mary, my Granny, passed away yesterday. She had a difficult life, but demonstrated strength and sunshine throughout. She taught me to bake and let me sneak sugar straight from the sugar bowl. She lived to be 93 and was sharp right to the very end.
All this love and support has been overwhelming. ❤️😍 Thank you!!! And now I’m planning to disappear from twitter for a couple of month to focus on doing the mom thing, reading books and getting news from real live newspapers. See you on the other side!

Dr. Walensky's voice is cracking with emotion talking about her feeling of "impending doom" and begging people to "just hold on a little while longer." She is concerned about the rising trajectory of COVID cases.
Twitter Shuts Down Entire Network To Slow Spread Of Negative Biden News via
@TheBabylonBee
Wow, this has never been done in history. This includes his really bad interview last night. Why is Twitter doing this. Bringing more attention to Sleepy Joe & Big T
I used Uber Eats to order my kids a birthday party kit from Chuck E. Cheese tonight. (It is not anyone’s birthday.) 2 pizzas, cake, prizes. They had been begging for “the best pizza in the world” for weeks. I haven’t seen them this happy in a long time. Quarantine win!
Hello newsroom, my old friend. I’ll be filling in as co-host of
@npratc
all this week! On a personal level, this is a very big deal for me. In 2007 when I was a member station reporter in Sacramento, my motivational softball 🥎 walk-up song was the All Things Considered theme.
We’ll see how long this lasts, but the fact that the president didn’t tweet storm last night, largely stayed on script at the rally and isn’t tweeting early this morning, is a sign that the current situation is serious.
It’s picture day at daycare. Who knew?! Not me. Baby arrived wearing the same onesie he had on yesterday and no pants. 👖 Mom of the year candidate right here.
My older kiddo (nearly 7) has been struggling to get to sleep at night so I got the bright idea of reading him the Mueller Report until he falls asleep. It worked! But then he woke up at 5 saying his bedtime story gave him nightmares.
#mommyfail
Today was a good day. Got the trees trimmed. Delivered food to my parents. Went for a long run. Discovered we could make fries in the air fryer/toaster oven. Made curry mayo. Found 2 packets of yeast in the fridge!!! Made chicken prik khing. Made cosmos. And got zero work done.
7 year old comes running into the home office. “Mom, the toilet is smoking. You’ve got to come look!” (Our water is being shut off today for water main maintenance so I was legit concerned). He wins this round. 👀
When I interviewed a republican congressman about the Tulsa speech, his biggest concern was that Trump isn’t talking about his second term agenda. Hannity lobbed POTUS a softball about that very thing and the answer was...
Taped an
@nprpolitics
podcast, just did an interview on
@npratc
, but my real accomplishment for the day was taking my parents to
@cvspharmacy
for their first doses of COVID vaccine💉!!!
.
@RudyGiuliani
, by far the greatest mayor in the history of NYC, and who has been working tirelessly exposing the most corrupt election (by far!) in the history of the USA, has tested positive for the China Virus. Get better soon Rudy, we will carry on!!!
A giant thank you to all the kind strangers, who opened doors, grabbed bags, helped with the stroller, tried to entertain a crying 13 month old and helped a 6 year old find the men’s room. They helped make the upcoming
@nprpolitics
Podcast interview with
@SenGillibrand
possible.
Tonight my kids busted into the home office to tell me “it’s officially Hanukkah now” while I was on
@CBSNLive
. My naked toddler then unplugged my ring light, which strikes me as not really in the spirit of the Festival of Lights. Word is, none of this went out on the feed.
While I was monitoring the White House COVID response press briefing today, my parents got their second shots of the Moderna vaccine. Dad called during the briefing. Luckily I was muted.
.
@LeaderMcConnell
delivered a speech absolutely torching Trump for months of lies about the election, aiming the mob at the Capitol and delaying any response to call them off. But now he’s arguing the senate can’t convict a private citizen. He delayed trial until Trump was out.
From
@SecretService
spokesperson: "The Secret Service has determined that no agency personnel used tear gas or capsicum spray during its efforts to secure the area near Lafayette Park on Monday, June 1st, 2020." Park Police already denied they did. But
@wusa9
found canisters.
Internal debate. Do I show up to the zoom with
@OhioState
students I am supposed to do wearing a hoodie and smudged eye makeup so they can see what it looks like to work a giant story all night long? Or do I straighten up so they don't think I am a slouch?
Going back over President Trump's 2017 inaugural address, I am struck by this line: "Every four years, we gather on these steps to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power, and we are grateful to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for their gracious aid."
A source familiar confirms that
@VP
will attend
@JoeBiden
’s inauguration. There had been a question...and President Trump said he won’t be there. Biden publicly encouraged Pence to attend, out of tradition and symbolism re: peaceful transfer of power.
The
@nprpolitics
team paused ever so briefly between the Trump-Zelensky bilat and the Trump press conference for cupcakes. (It’s my birthday!) Thanks guys!!!
The White House declared a lid at 11:32. That means we shouldn’t expect to see or hear from President Trump (aside from the potential for tweets), on the day after protests broke out all over America and multiple cities saw violent clashes between police and protestors, looting.
Today Harry Styles played a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR. Really, all I could see was his hair. But he does have impressive hair. Can’t wait to see the video when it posts!
So, it turns out when the White House and Trump campaign insisted repeatedly that no tear gas was used, despite what journalists and protestors described and everyone saw on TV, they were wrong.
She looks like maybe she feels a tiny bit guilty. As far as we can tell a kind soul picked her up as she dodged cars last night on a busy street, called he police, who got her to
@fairfaxanimals
. We are so grateful!
Just dropping in to give a massive grateful shout out to the very nice
@SouthwestAir
employee at LAX who reunited us with our lost 9-year-old. He went above and beyond! …at 9 PM on Christmas Eve. (And spared us all from the real-life version of a holiday family movie.)
Not pictured, 7-year-old running into the room saying “I’m going for a bike ride” and me putting my arm out to non-verbally say “ahhh get out I’m on the Newshour!” Luckily
@amyewalter
was talking at the time.
Today was really quite weird. I was radio pooler, which means I was in the room as the president asked his aides to testify to his excellent temperament. Meanwhile everyone's phones were buzzing with tornado warnings. And later, as I headed home, a bird pooped on me.
Baby boy (technically now toddler boy) is officially walking! It was tentative and sweet, like he still wasn’t sure it would be more efficient than crawling. As I put him down to bed, I thought “tonight he will dream about running.”
Have been calling around for reax to the New Yorker story and Avenatti claim. Republicans close to the White House saying "there's resolve in the White House" regarding Kavanaugh nomination and to put a finer point on it “Total resolve. Trump loves a good fight.”
I am honored that my colleagues in the White House Correspondents’ Association have given me the chance to work for them as a member the WHCA board. There’s a lot of work to do! Special thanks to my junior campaign manager who spent 6 hours today doing stroller GOTV.
Asked about whether the "irregularities" alleged by the RNC and Trump campaign would change the election outcome,
@GOPChairwoman
says "Is it going to be enough? No."...before promptly correcting herself and saying "we don't know" and asking for more time.
I just made an appointment for my family to get flu shots this weekend. The family that gets shots together...has one less thing to worry about together? Clearly this slogan needs work, but I am a big believer in flu shots.
President Trump is saying it could be until July or August until coronavirus is under control. (He had previously predicted April. This is much more realistic). "Is this the new normal? We'll see what happens."
For just $10,000 a month, Andrew Yang’s campaign got a whole lot of information about 450,000 people. That is a bargain compared to what other campaigns are spending on Facebook ads.
Dear
@NewsHour
viewers. Yes, my background was very different last night. (Our internet has been out for a week and this hallway is closest to my neighbors’ house. I borrowed their Wi-Fi for the show.) Answers to guitar questions to follow. 🎸 1/
“I don’t think anybody is questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. I think that is over with,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said after an Oval Office session with President Biden. “We’re sitting with the president today.”
I went to the mall over the weekend, because I’m vaccinated and these are the things we can do now! Not sure if everyone also did the same thing for the first time or if the mall was this way the whole time. But it turns out, I still dislike the mall. :-(
The president does this on Sunday mornings to drive the conversation on all the political panel shows that go on the air shortly. Presenting the press as the enemy/opposition has been one of his strategies since day one.
The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it’s TRUE. I am providing a great service by explaining this to the American People. They purposely cause great division & distrust. They can also cause War! They are very dangerous & sick!
I just realized I accidentally posted our family's goofy Baby Yoda PJs holiday card photo on my professional facebook page...and didn't realize it for 2 days. This is fairly mortifying for any number of reasons.
In other news, Weezer played a Tiny Desk Concert today at NPR and I didn’t even know it was happening until it was over because of the Cohen hearing. High school me would be very mad.
It’s official. This year I am thankful for Zoom. We were able to see family we haven’t spent Thanksgiving with in more than a decade. We drank. We ate. We laughed. And there were goats!
Very sad to learn of the passing of the great Bob Edwards, the man whose voice made Morning Edition what it was. For me, one of the highlights of moving to DC and getting a job at NPR was getting to play softball with Bob on Sundays for a couple of years.
Things accomplished while away from the daily news grind:
- Baby gained 5 lbs*
- bleached grout
- organized pantry
- thank you cards
- so much online shopping
- perspective found (but will it last?)
- elected to WHCA board
