Some of the so many “kain limar,” a weft ikat textile art of the Malay tradition, belonging to collector John Ang. Some serious beauty going on here. Gleaming, humbling, deep — every thread has been a breath before the loom.
Lunchtime chitchat: my colleague shared how the concept of ‘budi’ is rooted in the Malay psyche, an all-permeating essence. He was willing to say that it even predated the coming of Islam amongst the Malay peoples. ‘Budaya’, Malay for culture, is ‘budi’ + ‘daya’.
Peta favourite minggu ini. Wilayah Selangor - ‘Salangore’ - dan Sungai Ujong pada 1875-6, dipetakan British. Try to spot a certain ‘Qualla Lampur’ up the Klang river - pekan yang masa ini masih bertatih dan agak belemuih. Lukut juga masih dikira dalam lingkungan kuasa Selangor.
this is such a random rant but yall know how much i love coffee but literally not even one coffee shop in kl stands out its almost like everyone uses the same beans wtf? its so WACK. I just want some good coffee man 😞 im done trying out new places just to be dissapointed!!!!!
Kneading crosscurrents, intersections, orbits, circuits, and mandalas to better imagine the histories of this space.
Seas and winds as bridges, instead of where all conversations end. Garland of communities and coastlines as pulses that transmit, speaking to one another.
A more realistic post-lockdown itinerary of mine would include paying a visit to this mosque in Merbok, right in the vicinity of Gunung Jerai. Look at the mihrab and minbar.
Spent some two weeks foraging for this book in libraries around KL, only to find it at the rare books section of the IAMM Scholar’s Library. Modern pantang larang necessitates the parchment paper and gloves.
While I go on and say things like this is a mapping of my potential research materials, it really is, deep down, a post-pandemic itinerary that I yearn for.
“The most productive step is to recognise that being Malay is not a monolithic expedience, and that it finds expression in many valid ways.”
I think this reverberates across the Causeway and beyond.

"He considers himself no ‘quintessential' Malay, but I wonder if he’s ever questioned where... this ‘quintessential' Malay comes from.”
After living in Singapore for over a year. I can say that the reason Malaysia is not as popular as Singapore and Thailand for Westerners is not because there's nothing fun in Malaysia
IT'S BECAUSE MALAYSIAN HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR WHITE PEOPLE BULLSHIT
It’s a distraction to limit this ‘budi’ to its modern practice, which is usually dressed down to a ‘kesopanan’, or being polite for the sake of it. Budi here is better placed within an inner clockwork of engaging the substance of being — the saripati, zat, ruh, the self.
My mum found this short essay I made in 2006. I gave it a read again, of course, and am happy to find this written, at an exam, by a 17-year-old me: “beauty and money are not all good for us.”
So the prime minister, himself a physician, popped into ‘Al-Tibb’ yesterday, our ongoing exhibition on the history of medicine in Islamic cultures. Spot a baffled hardworking colleague (she’s still baffled).
Not my sister quitting her corporate job to build a (now successful) carpentry business with her husband. ❤️
I might be biased but their works are supeeeer gorgeous 😍
I wonder if the Japanese are who they are today because of this marked attitude and sensitivity towards the day-to-day, the vernacular. Such a cultivated agency to understand and move things that are otherwise taken as mundane or profane is inspiring.
This is a huge deal. Ships that cannot wait for spots for bunkering & crew changes in Singapore plan their transit stops at Port Klang or Tanjung Pelepas, the 12th and 19th largest container ports in the world. & US "coalition" can't wage war against them.
This fallacy is reflective of our culture at best: addressing the problem by not addressing the problem, sweeping things under the carpet by coming up with ‘new’ things hoping it’ll solve the original problem. The cycle is vicious.

Tutup jer lah media platform itu. Delete yr account in IG.
Why blame his family when you can control yrself & be responsible to yrself, Puan acaciadiana.
A good read.
ISIS, or what’s left of it, has since been fought down to scraps, at least territorially. While their interpretation of Islamic texts has so often been described as “literal,” this apparently would only fall short of a fuller picture.
It was a simple Friday morning in Ipoh. Gerimis turun. The Kledang range, looming over a cemetery whose name is Gurap, a kind of ship. That, and my Opah, leaving all of us for something so much better. And it all really went by so simply.
Used to commute close to 4 hours daily on highways. The congestion, distance and the occasional need to rush and speed really charred my brain.
I relocated somewhere closer to the city centre with multiple routes (roads, MRT) I can choose from to go to work. Feels healthier.
I do wonder how people survive in the Klang Valley.
You could spend 1.5 hours in traffic, daily, just to get to work (to clear some 30km).
You’ll probably do this twice per day.
You’re probably mostly consuming the radio.
What would you do with 15 extra hours per week?
I owe it a lot to the peripatetics of Jejak Rasul to lend me a window to the manifold Islamic geographies when I was younger — that in no way could the realities from Zanzibar to Canton, Murcia to Ternate, simply be a flat terrain, so to speak.
Jejak Rasul sudah memasuki usia 25 tahun! Untuk tahun ini, kami akan membawa kisah Nabi Musa AS ... Walau bergelar rasul ulul azmi, baginda tidak henti - henti diuji Allah... Mudah-mudahan setiap paparan

akan memberi ilmu untuk kita semua ❤️
Before any of this even started, I: (1) didn’t even know how “belay” is spelled (I thought it’s like “billet,” as in the ticket) and, (2) was surely afraid of heights. The spelling I’m now OK with. Am I still afraid of heights, though? Absolutely yes.

Rakan diuji offer Firma Arki starting price 1.8k for M.Arch Grad. Firma ternama.
Bila diinterview katanya 'awak single, so 1.8k should be just fine'
Rakan maklum, 'I have parents to support', majikan menjawab 'we do not run charity here'....
