I’ll repeat what I say every summer about private cafes in NYC parks: it’s racist & classist to have a paywall on public alcohol consumption. We should fully legalize drinking in public. We can’t talk about extending sidewalk cafes into city streets without confronting it.

scoop: The new jails in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan & the Bronx that are replacing Rikers are GROWING in capacity. NYC has too many people to incarcerate, so they're cutting space for detainees with mental illness while tripling the # of beds for women.

I understand why people like the open restaurants program but those who like that it reduces parking should concede that businesses expanding their footprint (like, w little buildings) for free on public sidewalks & streets is something to reevaluate before it becomes permanent

The problem with "more affordable housing won't pencil out" is that it leaves out a big part of the why: the high price they shelled out for the land based on projected rents. You're saying rents must be set by speculators, we're saying curb speculation through regulation. 1/

FWIW my rent-stabilized bldg/apt is pretty well-maintained, LL bought 30 yrs ago, paid off mortgage 10 years later, keeps things in shape, isn't evicting ppl. Meaning, RS works & there's plenty of money to maintain decent housing when you're not gambling it to exploit more ppl

In 2019, at age 32, I got my name on a lease for the 1st time & my 1st apt of my own--only possible bc of the 2019 rent reforms. This is the longest I've lived in an apt, only possible bc it's stabilized & the 0-1.5% kept my rent from being more unreasonable than it already is
