But there's no reason to panic yet. The Ohio samples were collected last winter. We don't know if these viruses have continued to transmit in deer and establish permanently. New surveillance from this past fall will determine this in short order.

In our new @Nature paper Andrew Bowman and @OSUVetCollege colleagues find high rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Ohio's white-tailed deer and evidence of human-to-deer and deer-to-deer transmission. A new animal reservoir could seed future variants that wind up back in humans.
A @Nature paper reports the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in more than 35% of 360 white-tailed deer tested in northeast Ohio. At least three viral lineages from humans were found in the animals alongside evidence of deer-to-deer transmission.
