I’ve been seeing some interpretations of The Last Jedi in my mentions that are making me scratch my head and wonder if I saw the same movie. So I thought I’d tackle a few of them in a thread.
People who don't know Star Wars Lore: ""The Acolyte" is breaking canon!"
The Acolyte: <drops a deep canon cut in the best way possible because it knows the lore so well>
The Last Jedi is, hands down, the best Star Wars film to come out since A New Hope and it beautifully honored the legacy and mythology of Star Wars.

Known transphobe J.K. Rowling is now reported to be an active exec producer on the ‘HARRY POTTER’ series where she will be involved in the show’s decision-making.

First: Luke Skywalker. Some contend that he was inconsistent with his character from Return of the Jedi. “He wouldn’t murder his nephew!” No. He wouldn’t. And didn’t.
He sure thought about it though. Because he sensed that cataclysmic future from Ben. He does the same to Vader.
Luke’s arc in The Last Jedi is steeped in the history of Star Wars and mythology of the world. When he realizes neutrality benefits the oppressors, he comes back, but on his terms, taking up the appearance of Excalibur without betraying his ideals. The pinnacle of being a Jedi.
Dramatic tension isn’t about the final disposition of character. It’s about the journey and how you get there. Furiosa was terrific and adds layers of nuance & context. Star Wars did the same thing.
Needing possibly fatal consequences to invest is simply lazy viewing.
Let’s try to make Hollywood understand this once and for all—PREQUELS are when sequels go to hell.
If you don’t have dramatic tension…the wheels fall off.
@DnDBeyond
I hope your sharing is just, "You were right. We should stick to this because it's good for us AND the hobby."
I understand you're probably just a social media person running this, so thanks for putting up with all of this. I know it's stressful for you personally to deal with
Star Wars has ALWAYS been political. From the very first day.
George Lucas said at the outset that he patterned the Rebels after the Viet Cong and the Empire after the United States and other colonial powers.
I'll totally do threads like this about other Star Wars movies, too. I love all of them to some extent. I HAVE done threads on all of them. This isn't new to The Last Jedi.
I think the analysis of Last Jedi gets the most love because it's actually the deepest, most complex one.
I have no idea why The Last Jedi is trending, but here’s your regular reminder that it’s the best film of the new era and maybe the second best Star Wars movie ever made, right after A New Hope.
@rianjohnson
scored a home run, even if a few mistakenly saw a strikeout.
On one side of Excalibur, it is written: "Take Me Up." On the other side, it is written: "Cast Me Away."
Excalibur is a symbol of the responsibility of power, and Luke's lightsaber across his journey represents this.
Luke is doing the heroic and selfless thing here, in his mind. To prevent needing to kill his nephew and to end this war between good and evil. And for a guy whose finishing move is casting aside his lightsaber, a life of non-interference is not a stretch.
Ultimately, for Luke, that answer was no. And acting on those visions of the future were dangerous as he saw it. It’s no wonder he cut himself off from the Force. He couldn’t trust that impulse and this felt the same as breaking that cycle of violence between good and evil.
The Luke that felt like the biggest departure from this at first blush was not in The Last Jedi, but in The Force Awakens. The central mystery of that film is NOT who Rey is, but why Luke wasn’t there to save Han.
Another complaint: some people didn’t like Leia’s survival after Ben’s attack on the Raddus. That’s subjective, I guess, but I and many audience members found it moving and beautiful. Leia uses the Force in pretty much EVERY Star Wars movie, so this was no surprise to anyone.
My biggest complaint about all of the Disney+ Star Wars offerings is that they aren't putting them out in physical media as well.
I want them on my shelves.
Please,
@DisneyPlus
, I'll pay for both. Just put it out physically, too. I need to complete my collection.
Rian Johnson was pulling a lot from Arthurian legend, too. The lightsaber is a stand in for Excalibur, upon which is written “Take me up, cast me away.” Arthur later in life had to grapple with the legacy of his violence.
When you watch the prequel trilogy and original trilogy in this order, this rhyming scheme of that Skywalker temptation to change the future really shines.
Second, I’m talking about Star Wars because I love it. Some in my mentions suggested the movie was 5 years old and it was irritating that I keep talking about it. But I’m never going to stop talking about Star Wars, I still talk ANH and TPM, why not TLJ too?
I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed we didn't get Anakin in TLJ for a minute, but when I realized the emotional connection Luke had and needed was to Yoda as a mentor to teach him the lesson in the moment, it made perfect sense to me.
Anakin would have been fan service.
It’s beautifully shot and John Williams brings his A game to the moment. I sat in theaters watching it with audiences time and again and I heard nary a laugh or snicker, but many shocked tears and a palpable heartbreak. Audiences were as into it as I was.
Even after Luke goes to his father to try to bring out the good in him, Vader hints at a future where Leia is bent to the dark side and Luke flies into a rage, wanting to end his father before letting this future happen.
The complaint should be, “Why didn’t Poe tell Holdo about his plan?”
But he didn’t. Because it was a bad plan and she would have countermanded it. Because it was bad.
Poe screwed that up. Not Holdo. Superior officers owe their subordinates zero context to their orders.
Luke would never kill his nephew, no. But if he saw a dark future and that darkness in Ben that had already been there, he would absolutely think about possibilities. It’s the whole “would you kill a baby if you knew they grew to be a monster debate.”

Why in the galacy would she tell a recently demoted pilot her plan? They had no idea how the First Order was tracking them, they couldn’t risk any leaks. Holdo acted as she should have.
This is mirrored with Luke in Empire Strikes Back. He tears off across the galaxy to save Han and Leia. They didn’t even make it to Cloud City before he starts seeing this future. Yoda and Obi-Wan warn him not to, but he does anyway.
Canto Bight does make a point about war profiteering, but DJ turns that on its ear for Finn, forcing him to choose which worldview he believes: Rose’s or DJ’s. They are the angel and devil on his shoulder goading him to his arc, and it’s terrific.
From a storytelling perspective, it also gives us the kids—the next generation of those oppressed—witnessing the spark of rebellion and getting the spark of Luke’s story. You don’t get the entire galaxy showing up at the end of Rise of Skywalker without this element.
Another one was that Rose somehow ruined Finn’s sacrifice and doomed the Resistance. And this is one I just don’t understand. The filmmaking is clear that Finn’s gesture would have been futile, and killed ONLY him.
In Attack of the Clones, Anakin disobeys his masters to save his attachments from a future that he may very well cause. In Revenge of the Sith, he takes it even further.
Admiral Holdo also says, point blank, that their greatest mission is to spread the spark that will bring the First Order down and the threads woven from Canto Bight accomplish that through the film and leave us with one of the most hopeful moments ending a dark Star Wars film.
These movies all rhyme. A mentor pulls a whiz kid mechanic pilot strong in the Force from a desert planet, teach them about the Force and die by a red lightsaber. So why did Han, the skeptic, have to step in to be the mentor instead of Luke?
Also, one more point: I think these threads about The Last Jedi resonate so much and get spread so far and wide because we’re all so constantly gaslit about its “lack of quality” by a few bad actors and YouTube grifters.
Some think that somehow Holdo broke canon with her maneuver with her sacrifice, and I don’t understand that one either. Like… a Mon Cal cruiser is too expensive to manufacture as a missile and it didn’t even destroy the ship, nor interrupt the FO’s ability to wage war on Crait
Without Canto Bight, you don’t get Finn’s arc OR Poe’s. The First Order would have no idea that the Resistance was bailing to Crait had Poe not foolishly broadcast that on an open channel for DJ to hear and sell them out with when captured.
It is worth pointing out again that Newt Gingrich is one of the chief inspirations for the downfall of the Republic in Star Wars.
Newt Gingrich is where Nute Gunray derives his name.
Third, you’re welcome to your opinion and to disagree with me about, that’s fine and reasonable. Just please do that privately and/or leave me out of it.
It’s sad how much they’ve twisted the narrative to the point where it’s just parody.
BattleTech is doing great and is in good hands, and you can tell by the quality of folks spinning yarns about it like this.
Go play. Have some fun.
Rian directed one of the best Star Wars films ever made and I was so excited to see it was the most watched Star Wars movie on streaming for the holiday.

"The story that I did, I really got to be Han Solo at the end. That’s kind of the arc of the story... That’s the fun part. That’s the guy that’s the most fun to be."
It is worth noting that the announcements of the Benioff and Weiss projects have been scrubbed from the official site. You know what's still there?

The Last Jedi is trending again, which is good enough of a reason to chime in to say it rules.
There are folks who would gaslight you into thinking you're a monster for loving it, but they're wrong. About a lot of things.
But we can ignore/block 'em and love what we love.

I guess I'm choosing Twitter violence but I'm rewatching the sequel trilogy and I absolutley love everything about The Last Jedi. Visually, thematically, performances. I think my only gripe is it should have been a duology with TFA to launch a new era of stories, not a trilogy.
Reva is such a great character, Moses Ingram is a terrific performer, and racists can melt under the heat of Tatooine’s twin suns.
There’s no room in the fandom for the kind of abuse that was thrown her way and anyone perpetuating it is a bad person, straight up.
We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold. If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist.
5 years ago, the best movie of the new era of Star Wars, The Last Jedi, was released.
It just gets better and better with every viewing. It's rich in character, theme, action, adventure, and just jaw-droppingly cool stuff.
