Jason helped so many English speaking people become sumo fans. Really sad that
@NhkSumo
saw the need to go after his account. It’s such a valuable resource and now it’s gone.
Today, NHK issued a 3rd strike to my channel and YouTube deleted the whole account. All 7,000+ videos are gone. Very sad. End of an era. I will try to start a new channel with only my commentary in February. Updates and links here on Twitter soon.
Nobody can say Hoshoryu isn’t a big match player now. 4 do or die matches in a row against Kirishima, Wakamotoharu, Hakuoho and Hokutofuji and he won convincingly each time. Can’t wait for him to bring that steel and focus to Ozeki.

Some storylines for Nagoya
- The rise of Onosato
- Kirishima quest for 10
- Takakeisho Kadoban IX
- return of Wakatakakage
- Hiradoumi Sanyaku debut
- Takerufuji vs Hakuoho Juryo showdown
- Nabatame and Kayo Juryo debut
Hopefully less injuries this time and it’ll be great
When Takakeisho became Ozeki the Sanyaku was Hakuho, Kakuryu, Goeido, Takayasu, Tochinoshin. Ichinojo, Aoiyama and Mitakeumi. Kotoshogiku was M1, Kirishima was in Juryo, Hoshoryu and Kotozakura were in makushita, Terunofuji was in Sandanme and Daiamami was Juryo 3
Seeing a lot of people upset with Tobizaru going for the leg kick on Terunofuji. That’s a signature move of his. He uses Kekaeshi about 60 times more often than average. Just cos Terunofuji has had knee injuries doesn’t mean Tobizaru must ignore a key offensive weapon.

Just a reminder that when Kiribayama was Hoshoryu’s age he had just gotten a 9-6 at M8 and was about to have his first basho in the joi. Hoshoryu has gotten 9 consecutive kachikoshis, 8 of which have been in Sanyaku. Ozeki Hoshoryu is only a matter of time.

Why do I like Takakeisho? Seems as good a time as any to go into my sumo watching history to tell the story. I started watching sumo in July 2018 when I was traveling in Japan. It was the first basho Mitakeumi won. I was immediately hooked.

Want to say a big thank you to everyone online talking sumo with us this basho and every basho. Thanks to the podcasters, the streamers, the YouTubers, the news gatherers, the translators, the photographers, the artists and the bloggers. It’s such a rich community.
Hoshoryu 8-1
Daieisho 7-2
Wakamotoharu 7-2
Not to go overboard with the point but this is what we want from Ozekis and they're providing it multiple bashos in a row. I'm so optimistic about how sumo is sitting right now. It was a bit gloomy 12 months ago. So much hope now.
I can see why some people don’t like Terunofuji. There is a brutality to his sumo that is both impressive and unsettling. He looked like he was fully prepared to tear Nishikigi limb from limb today. All with a calm but stern look on his face. This is not a criticism from me.
Hoping for a fully fit Takakeisho, Kirishima and Hoshoryu in Aki. Not sure we’ll see Terunofuji there but 3 Ozekis battling for supremacy would be awesome
At some point in the next 6 months Hakuoho is going to have an incredible basho and hype for him will go back through the roof. Quick reminder that at Miyagino he already went 14-1 in Juryo and 11-4 on Makuuchi debut. Please don’t attribute his rise to Isegahama in any way
Onosato looked up at Kotonowaka in awe after that defeat. He has clearly never tried to push someone and had them push back even harder. There was no trickery, no outmaneuver, just Kotonowaka overpowering the rookie. More Shiko needed Onosato. You’re not there yet.
Seeing this one quite a bit. I genuinely believe Hakuho would have approved of everything we saw today. I didn’t approve but I’ll get over it. Scratch that, I’m already over it. Still a Takakeisho fan and glad he won. Yokozuna in November
For those worried about Takakeisho giving up lots of kinboshis if he became Yokozuna I’ve been tracking that for a while. His current win rate as Ozeki v Maegashira has risen to 73%. Higher than Takayasu 72%, Goeido 64%, Shodai 57%, Kotooshu 67%, Terunofuji 68% and Harumafuji 72%
Takakeisho is out. I’m not surprised at all. He didn’t look 6 weeks away from being 100% when he finished up on day 15. He’s earned this time off with a brave and painful May performance. Hopefully he’s properly healthy in Aki and can be a yusho threat and Yokozuna hope.
Day 1 torikumi has been released. Wakatakakage is obviously absent, but a bit of a surprise is the Takakeisho is not on the schedule for Day and is kyujo for the Nagoya Basho.
Wakatakakage is getting a full knee reco. That sounds like he’d be back January at the earliest. Maybe March.
A January return would have him around Makushita 40.
A March return somewhere in Sandanme.
It’s a long road back, our best wishes for him. Good luck Waka
It's official. Wakatakakage had ACL reconstruction surgery right after Haru basho, and was released from hospital April 8th. He is now recovering and faces a long rehab period.

The retirement age for oyakatas is 65. In the next 4 years we will lose Isegahama (now 63), Hakkaku (61), Kasugano (61), Shibatayama (61) and have just lost Michinoku (65). Personally I can’t wait for 2028.
It’s not Ozeki sumo. But it’s a kachi koshi. Go rest Takakeisho. Come back in July, or September, and show us the great sumo we know you can do. Btw, not a henka. He met that charge.

Asanoyama kyujo is heartbreaking. Feel like he’s fast becoming the new Takayasu. Good enough to get back to Ozeki but his body won’t allow him to even get a run at it.
Hokutofuji is one we were expecting. Just sad cos we want him healthy and competing.
One of the new promotees to Juryo for September is Kiryuko from Tatsunami beya. He’s 21, he’s small, he’s very, very tricky and he’s also a hero who saved a man’s life by giving them cpr. I’ve billed him as the “next Ura”, which is of course inaccurate , he’ll be his own man 💪
I don’t like when Ura does that. If he keeps jumping through rifts in space time to dodge attacks he could destroy the universe as we know it. And then what will Nishikigi have to eat?
Aprovechando que ha gustado mucho la foto de Akua que hoy comparto una de las fotos más potentes que le hicieron nunca a un sumotori.
Así era el tren inferior del Yokozuna Wakanohana.

All six yushos this year won by men who now sit either at Ozeki or Yokozuna. Not sure when the last time that happened but I bet it was heavily dominated by Hakuho
More news on the Hakuho/Isegahama story. They’ll also be bringing in an outside consultant. The man chosen, 65th Yokozuna Takanohana, has a history dealing with stable violence and was seen as the best most experienced man for the job. 1/2
Takakeisho is Kyujo. Is that the end of our great hamster? It’s been an amazing run either way but eventually his body has failed him too many times for him to bounce back from. Get well Takakeisho
Is it weird that I am both worried at the prospect that Terunofuji could be a shadow of himself that can’t go 15 days and also worried that he might destroy everyone and go 15-0 and make the rest look completely toothless?
Atamifuji loses a playoff. Gonoyama 9-6 on the edge of the joi. Onosato 12 wins on Juryo debut. Hokuseiho in the yusho race day 15. Hakuoho in the yusho race day 15 last basho. I want these 5 going head to head in the top division. Sumo is in a great space right now.
Kotonowaka vs Onosato felt like the first page of a long book. I can’t wait to see more from these two. I can’t wait to see Onosato fight harder for the inside position and see them get into a tsuparri battle or lock up on the belt and go to work. This will be a famous rivalry.

Being a Takakeisho fan is always a wild ride. For the 6th time he’ll be fronting up as a Katoban Ozeki battling to get 8 wins and keep rank. He’s 5/5 so far. Can he keep it going? I think so, I hope so. Go Hamster! 🐹
