A refreshingly honest ( and likely true), appraisal of the profession. I might dispute the ratios slightly…. Two points worth mentioning: 1. The “average” 90 are hardly average 2. The technical is only one part of being an amazing surgeon
I am a technically average surgeon… And the odds are so are you… It’s not an insult. It’s the truth. I firmly believe in the 90/5 philosophy 5% of us are amazing 5% of us are horrible 90% of us are average… In my lifetime, I have observed only a couple surgeons that are true technical masters and innately gifted. most of us, however, work hard to improve throughout our careers. It’s the repetition, planning, and knowledge gained that distinguishes us. The constant observation and assessment of your environment. That is how mastery is achieved… You will often hear me downplay, enabling technology… having operated in both low and high resource environments, I still think in many ways we grossly overvalue it. The one true positive for most of the tools is that it forces solid preoperative planning… I will argue that planning is likely the biggest factor in improving outcomes…. More so than the technology itself. #OrthopedicSurgery #Neurosurgery #SpineSurgery
