Exactly! Saying slavery is wrong has nothing to do with someone's feelings.
The horrendous history of owning human beings as personal property and depriving them of their liberty can not be presented as a neutral fact.
Slavery is made possible by dehumanization and subjugation.
Tenured and promoted as of today. Here are the five principles I learned along the way that I intend to adhere in the future:
1- Make your health a priority.
2- Be a positive force.
3- Give yourself permission to say no.
4- Work can wait.
5- Respect your and other's time.
Yesterday, I learned that

The peer review crisis is impacting us all but most importantly early-career researchers who need to publish in a timely manner for career advancement. We, tenured faculty, can afford to wait but they can't. I have so much compassion for them.

I'm a grown ass, 35 year-old woman who will be an associate professor in a few months, but mom - a retired primary school teacher - still asks whether I am STUDYING when she video calls and sees me working.
Waking up to my first ever "accept as is - no revisions required" at the first round of peer review. Just the push I needed to finish the current paper in hand.

I disagree. A well crafted, targeted and focused cover letter makes all the difference. We can hardly tell from one's CV if they are the person we are looking for but I can make the case for someone who explains well why we should consider them.
The premier of Quebec exemplifies the dominant narrative of secularism in the province perfectly.

I had an abortion when I was 18.
I had no intention to be a parent; I was ready to do whatever it took to free myself. I ended that pregnancy legally and safely in Turkey.
By making abortion illegal, legislators aren't saving lives, they are destroying *some women's lives.

Maybe it isn't by choice and they are already suffering.
Maybe they are like me and they love their lives as it is.

I see a lot of tweets trying to either excuse the hate-motivated attack at University of Waterloo ("gender ideology" went too far) or to wash our hands of it (the attacker was an international student). Both are nonsense.
Two students and a female gender studies professor were stabbed at the University of Waterloo. I break down what happened — including the delayed emergency response system:
I am heading back home with a tired body, a COVID scare (luckily the result is negative), an exciting research network and a new tattoo. Oh, and a self-promise to not travel again until... You know...
The most hilarious birthday msg came from grandma.
She video called me on WhatsApp and wished a happy birthday. Continued with, "So you turned 36. I keep praying you have an accident and have a baby".

When political leaders don't uphold human rights, they suggest these rights are negotiable, empowering those who seek to erode them. This risks both marginalized populations' rights and the democratic foundations built on equality, freedom, and justice.
If you had any doubt about trans people being under siege, my mentions are unlike anything I’ve seen in all my years on this hellsite after helping write this.

Academia tends to make some of us feel like we don't belong. We should never forget the impact of the environment in eliciting this feeling.
This book offers many examples of dehumanizing aspects of academia but also hope and concrete tools to help you thrive.

As I am conducting interviews for a research project I keep thinking about how research participants are offering us a gift (of their time, perceptions & experiences). As researchers, we decide what to do with their stories. This is both immense indebtedness and responsibility.
This reminds me of the senior male scholar who had said about my proposal "what you want to do isn't political science, it is law".
That dissertation ended up receiving a national prize, and yes, in political science.
We shouldn't let them define disciplinary boundaries.
I often think of the senior male scholar who did not like my work (which is a-ok) and described it as 'almost getting away with it, but not quite'.
I don't have a fully formed conclusion as for why I found this so alien and striking, but I did.
During my vacation this summer, I am learning new ways of being: existing in a way that is calmer, gentler and more aware. I am taking the time to truly recharge.
