hollywood is failing for a lot of reasons, mainly because it thinks movie making is banking and investing. movies are art, and the more you try to suppress that aspect the less interesting movies become, thus less sales.

smaller filmmaking teams are better. less people to get in the way. less room for sabotage.
if you had a difficult time making a movie using a large crew, go small. try making a movie by yourself, then expand out to a small crew. figure out what methods work best for you.

35 MM film requires lighting to look good. DV does not need lights (but better if used). On the bright side, DV helps to de-colonize cinema and make it available as an art form to poor and or non-1st world people. On the whole, an improvement :).

make art/films now. now is the best time. if the system - festwood, film media and critics, indiewood, hollywood are not interested in your work that’s fine. release on VOD, use YouTube, do DIY screenings. the system is stuck in a hollywood influenced past. 20+ yrs behind.

1 - most slow cinema movies are from asia or europe - where life has, for the most part, been slower than it is in the US for a long time (also europe is in asia, but that's another complicated topic for another time :))
kubrick's 2001 was based on a novel written in asia.

the 'make it in hollywood' dream is the capitalist fantasy of filmmaking - not a real thing for most people. making indie movies w/ available resources, developing your career, building a body of work, developing an artist fund for yourself for future work is realistic.

If Hollywood movies are the tallest buildings in the NYC skyline, then documentaries, experimental films, other art films, underground films, mainstream indie films are the rest of the city.Anyone serious about filmmaking should 100% familiarize themselves w/ non-Hollywood films.

GG made a bunch of real indie movies in the 2000s - 2010s. Fine is she wants to go for big paydays now - everyone is getting older, got big bills to pay when living in Brooklyn/LA/wherever major city :). People can check out her back catalog of indies.

in truth the shut downs are due to studios not paying writers properly and threatening to replace them with AI - so, low pay by studios, threat against working are the official accurate reasons for the shut down.

indie filmmakers should experiment with form, structure, presentation of movies. just making movies that are like filmed plays/mainstream TV is not enough. the indie space is the space for discovering new ways of telling stories using film.

obviously a new non-hollywood indie scene needs to be built. there is a lot of money there. and it will be a great work space for new ideas, new filmmakers. and a great space for the right audiences. also for the right film critics, arthouse theaters.
