After the flood in Chennai in 2015, India's first real time end to end Urban flood forecasting system was developed by 30 scientists from 8 institutes. It was an honor for me to lead the project
@iitbombay
@ClimateIITB
. Today it is highlighted
@AGU_Eos
Is there a need to change the PMRF selection procedure? IMHO, it should not be done at the beginning just based on proposal, but after 2 years, based on the initial progress and potential of the student as a researcher. The extra PMRF fund can be given for the rest of the PhD.
Climate Science is not all about generating maps with xx fold increase in risk. It is about generating useful scientific insight that can be readily converted to climate services tools for saving people from adverse impacts of warming.
Just looking at my google scholar profile and found that works with more satisfying research experiences got very few citations (mostly). Is it true for others?
An excellent article by
@MenonBioPhysics
. This is important for the IITs, who are setting up Sustainability cetre/ Hub, etc, only talking about Green Hydrogen and CCUS (they are important), but often forgetting about research on water and food security for all in this country.
We were preparing a slide on the growth of
@ClimateIITB
in the last 10 years. When we looked at it, it felt good. Thanks to our extremely motivated and passionate colleagues and students. The centre started with the CoE grant from
@IndiaDST
.
Did you know that the Indian monsoon isn't merely rainfall but a pivotal component for deciphering climate patterns? Subimal Ghosh's discoveries at
#EGU24
earned him the prestigious 2024 Alexander von Humboldt Medal! Learn more here:
Large scale perturbations of terrestrial water cycle components on land have the potential to alter atmospheric processes. Large scale water transfer may impact the monsoon rainfall spatial variability in India.

Heartiest Congratulations to our colleague of Department of Civil Engineering,
@iitbombay
to get elected as a Fellow (FNASc) of The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI)
@india_nasi
, Prayagraj, India in 2023.
GRL by
@theAGU
is now open access. In the name of open access, isn't AGU promoting regional bias, because most of the researchers from the Global South will not be able to pay 2900 USD for an article. Too Bad! (1/n)
Experimental forecast system for Monsoon Rain in Mumbai developed by students of
@ClimateIITB
, it says onset on the day after tomorrow (Friday, 7th June, 2024) with a good rain of 10-25 mm across the city. Soon, we will come up with a portal here.
#mumbairain
@iitbombay
On the way to Satara. A team from
@ClimateIITB
is reaching Satara today to meet the farmers of the eastern dry regions to understand the agriculture water problem. This should be the first step for any development of climate services.
Great news,
@ScienceMagazine
and
@ScienceAdvances
will not editorially reject a good paper on any city, say, Mumbai, Kolkata, giving the excuse that the work is regional and hence have lower impacts. Look ar this one:
We
@ClimateIITB
are setting up a few flood monitoring sensors in Mumbai, preferably at schools/colleges/ housing societies located at flood hotspots. Please come up with name/ location/ contact person. This data will be available to all.

India is the 2nd highest contributor to global greening, but does it translate to increased primary productivity?
@MeetRipan7
@kumar_chaturve
show warming inhibits translation of greening to increased atmospheric CO2 uptake by land vegetation in India:
Honored and humbled to receive the AGU DL Memorial Medal. Thanks,
@pkumar3691
for nominating me. Thanks to all my students and collaborators for excellent work and collaborations Grateful to
@iitbombay
for the support. Thank you,
@Hydrology_AGU
Vegetation productivity is affected and controlled by meteorological and hydrological factors such as soil moisture and vapor pressure deficits. But what are their relative roles in different parts of India. See
@dubey_nivi
's work at ERL:
Finally
@Jisha_Joseph22
's work on development and incorporation paddy cultivation and Indian practice modules in VIC is accepted in WRR by
@theAGU
after the rigorous review.
Hope now on the Indian community will start using the Indian version.
In this large country, we do not need just one Vigyan Ratna, but 'n' excellent scientists from different disciplines. Government needs to support Science by increasing the fund allocation to higher education and the grant amounts to promote high quality research.
Heartiest Congratulations
@AdrijaR18
, for an amazing Ph.D., not only for the fantastic publications (including WRR) but for working with farmers and making them understand the value of climate services. She was my first student who worked at a farm scale with the stakeholders.
2020 taught me that academic achievement does not mean publishing papers or winning awards, but it means working under adverse situations with many distractions because of kids and, side by side, managing all the household chores.
How did the experimental forecast from
@ClimateIITB
@iitbombay
perform this year. Except one, we correctly forecasted all the extremes at 1 day lead. Last evening's extreme was also forecasted by us at 2/3 days lead. funded by
@HDFCERGOGIC
#MumbaiRains
Completed a 7 day long fabulous Kashmir trip. Saw Snowfall in Sonamarg, the beautiful Pahalgam and Doodhpathri, nice but a bit cloudy/ rainy Gulmarg & awesome Srinagar Shikara. But the best part was the Iftar party by
@Munir7005
and his hospitality. Thank you, Munir.
The dynamics of Himalayan Pine Ecosystem are not well explored.
@leena_khadke
performed an extensive analysis of the same at a high temporal resolution identifying its meteorological drivers with flux tower observations:

Prof. Subimal Ghosh (Civil Engineering) has been awarded the Cray’s Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam High-Performance Computing award 2020 in the area of R&D in HPC applications.
Congratulations to Prof. Ghosh and his team.
Very happy to share that my former doctoral student Anjana Devanand of
@ClimateIITB
@iitbombay
has got a full-time position as Hydroclimate Modeller at
@CSIRO
, Australia. Congratulations, Anjana.
Congratulations
@zharoshan
for your work
@NatureComms
, the work shows that using western models to represent Indian human components (e.g., irrigation) results in misleading conclusions. Indian practices are different from those of global north requiring special module.
Durgapuja, for us it is more about celebrating the homecoming of our daughter Uma than worshipping Goddess, this is the celebration of all irrespective of caste, religion, gender or anything. Some glimpses of Puja preparation at Powai, Mumbai...
Only two days until the

Mumbaikars, please start carrying your umbrellas and raincoats from tomorrow. Good spells of rain are expected from tomorrow (26th June) reaching high values on 27th June as per the experimental Mumbai rainfall forecasts from
@ClimateIITB
Such a nice visibility today in Mumbai
@iitbombay
. Thanks,
@rmurtugudde
for nicely explaining this, "..Some large scale anticyclone at the mid level seems to be forcing an anticyclone at the boundary layer level and bringing in more ocean airmass."
2nd law of thermodynamics is very powerful law for climate science. When,
@akleidon
visited
@iitbombay
@ClimateIITB
he introduced this to us. Our student Mayank Gupta did some theoretical derivation for surface energy balance with theory of maximum power:
On behalf of

Today at my daughter's school, the kids of standard 1 celebrated Elephant's day. Great to see that the primary schools are giving importance to Ecological Awareness.
Can we develop climate services for agriculture at the farm scale in a region with minimal sensors, freely available satellite products, and weather and extended-range forecasts?
@AdrijaR18
demonstrated that it's possible in
@STOTEN_journal
@ClimateIITB
In a country like India Climate Adaptation and sector specific Early Warning System Design should be one of the major focus. However, our limited experiences in discussions with industries show the interest is only in mitigation, and we forget about the importance of Adaptation.
Honor and privilege for us to have
@NaushadF
, co-chairman Forbes Marshall and Jamshyd Godrej, MD
@GodrejAndBoyce
at the ongoing 'Stanford-IITB Joint Workshop on Climate Change'
Their insightful talk videos will be shared soon!
1) What are the climate drivers of the variability of vegetation productivity in India (Carbon uptake)? Work by Akash Verma and
@vikram_chandel_
will give you some answers. Here is the recently accepted work:
Heartiest congratulations to my doctoral student
@leena_khadke
for receiving the prestigious Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF).
@iitbombay
@EnggHead
. Leena will be working on understanding the Himalayan Vegetation Atmosphere interactions.
Web chcek in has become a way to earn money wrongly by the airlines, and
@IndiGo6E
is one of them. When I am trying to web check in for my flight, it says no free seats are available and hence not issuing boarding pass. This is wrong and they should stop such terrible practices.
Climate models show biases or systematic errors. Quantile mapping methods (Bias Correction Spatial Disaggregation) are popular for correcting these biases. But do they only fix only systematic error, or do they risk overcorrection?
@vikram_chandel_
answers
@shrabanitripath
showed the strength of crowdsourced data in the absence of an urban flood monitoring system. Still the number of tweets are inadequate for a city like Mumbai, and this work encourages more tweets for real-time monitoring of flood.
The role of Carbon Fertilization on vegetation productivity in India is unclear mostly because of data unavailability. But what do the models say?
@dubey_nivi
's 2nd paper
@IOPenvironment
ERL paper summarizes the same.

The widely used Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model does not have a glacier module. My student
@vikram_chandel_
developed a glacier module for VIC and applied the same for Himalayan River basin.
The codes are online available.

Increase of short duration rainfall extremes in India in a warming scenario and likely impacts on flash flood. 2 research articles one from
@iitbombay
@ClimateIITB
and another from
@iitgn
@vmishraiit
highlighted.
After all Indian cities have higher population and hence, has higher impacts. And I am sure as claimed by these journals, they do not have regional bias. Global south scientists, please submit and report editorial rejections if they say it is too regional, hence not impactful.
Now we
@ClimateIITB
(thanks to
@Pujaiitb
&
@rmurtugudde
