2 Sep is a bad day for Maritime Patrol. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of the death of CXX/9 in XV239 in Toronto and the 16th anniversary of the death of CXX/3 in XV230 in Afghanistan. I’ll be raising a glass to the 21 mates who are still on patrol. 🥃

107 years ago, Pte Willie Roxburgh and others from 16th Royal Scots went ‘over the top’. Some of them would make it; however, for Willie this day was his last. He is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval and the battalion at Contalmaison.

When I joined the RAF, there were no women. They were in the WRAF, the couldn’t fly or fight with the men. Today they can. And, they can wear the hair in a ponytail or ‘battle braids’. Apparently, to some at least, that makes us less professional or ‘military’. I think not. …

Just off to my bed remembering that 105 years ago my great uncle Willie Roxburgh and his mate Ernie Becker would be getting ready to go ‘over the top’ with 16th Royal Scots. Neither would see the day out. After the war, Willie’s sister (Ina) married Ernie’s brother (Frankie).

When I joined the military, we sent gay men to jail, prevented women from doing a number of jobs they have proved to be more than capable of doing and sacked them for getting pregnant. I’m glad we’re a bit more ‘woke’ now.

Just heard of the passing of another wartime fighter pilot. Peter ‘Percy’ Proctor flew Hurricanes in Combat and, latterly, Spitfires. And he did a charity parachute jump at 92!

104 yrs ago today, my ggd Pte Thomas Roberts and his mates of the 10th Bn Scottish Rifles went ‘over the top’. Around 400 did not survive the day. He has no known grave and, like 20,598 others, is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
