USFS and cal fire firefighters prepare hose to haul up 1200 vertical ft of steep fireline to extend a 6,000 ft hoselay above kirkwood last night. Hiking in the fire, in the middle of the night, at 7500 feet with 60 lbs or more on their backs. They deserve our thanks.

100 sandbags and multiple flood barriers are being deployed at my cabin in joshua tree saturday in advance of the storm. i've spent 3 years building flood channels and bioswales to divert runoff. If I lose my place to a flood will be the ultimate irony.

I am working on a "Best Practices" sheet for reporters covering wildfires in CA. Too many editors and orgs sending their people out without fireline etiquette, PPE, etc. Based on colleague feedback I will bring copies into the field and hand them out as needed for a learning tool

Since the pandemic started I've avoided 4 known interactions with people exposed to COVID, by insisting on social distancing and staying at home. 2 later tested positive for the virus, and 1 went on to dose their entire family's thanksgiving. So yeah, minimizing activity helps.

To news media colleagues: The CA wildfire siege is incredibly dangerous and is NOT one for your 1st time fire coverage. If you don't have PPE (nomex, helmet, boots, shelter) you are a safety liability to firefighters. Yes, the law allows us in, and I want to keep it that way.
