John Cooke's 'Geographical Clock', from his 'Universal Atlas' of 1802. Point the arrow on the inner disc at a location and get the time at 23 others, from which, as the text tells us, 'a spirit of enquiry may be wakened in the youthful breast' @bodleianlibs

It's the U.S. election, and here's a reminder of how it all started. On the cover of 'Washington D.C and vicinity' George Washington and the Founding Fathers lay the foundations in 1793 for the Capitol building, which rises, ghost-like, behind them @bodleianlibs @AmericanMaps

Images from a 1947 edition of the Officer's Atlas, published by the Soviet General Staff, including the Solar System and an image of a 1945 eclipse seen from the USSR. Battle plans as well, from Marathon (490 B.C.E.) to Berlin (1945) @bodleianlibs

the Bodleian map team enjoyed the Autumn picture so much that have written more in a blog post. See here for Spring, Summer and Winter and a remarkable link with the Bodleian @bodleianlibs

Autumn is represented by Bacchus drinking wine in Fredrick de Wit's double hemisphere World map, c1660. Bacchus can hold his liquor, unlike the poor soul on the right. Africa is represented by the scorpion, the satyrs supporting Bacchus lust and mischief. @bodleianlibs

There are many wonderful things to see on our beautiful Tudor map tapestries, including this white horse. It doesn't look anything like the horse it's meant to represent, Uffington's famous hill figure but we like it anyway. Come and see it in the Weston Library @bodleianlibs

Gold-leaf map bling! Is there a better compass rose than this, from John Thornton's 1682 map of the Indian Ocean? @MilleaNick @bodleianlibs

Too much rain? here's a nice shiny sun from Visscher's Atlas Minor, c1705. Image from a Bodleian blog about the Spring Equinox, @MilleaNick @bodleianlibs

A convenient fish-tail saves Poseidon's blushes in William Hole's 1607 map of Britannia for Camden's Britannia. Ceres is opposite, Goddess of agriculture, abundance, and Summer. Bath and Stonehenge shown a bit too close together! @bodleianlibs @MilleaNick

For our 1st post a lovely way of showing what a map does. From a Mexican town plan by publishers @guiaroji the map takes the blindfolded character in hand to show the way to go. @bodleianlibs @MilleaNick @bcsmaps @guiaroja
