no, homework does not work for non high achieving students, which is like 99% of students.
Homework. It’s become a trope to say it does not work. Does it work? Yes. The research evidence is messy and imperfect, but it does support an effect. We also know retrieval practice has a strong body of research evidence behind it and there’s evidence that the form of homework matters. This informs the type homework that should be set. It should be practice of knowledge and procedures taught in class, not independent research projects or ‘finish off’ tasks. However, this is not the end of it. Just because homework works, that doesn’t tell us whether we *should* set it or how much. There are reasonable arguments to be had that consider other factors such as time for free play or home life. In fact, scientific evidence can never tell us what we *should* do—that’s a moral question. We don’t need to deny scientific evidence to make a case against homework, should we wish to do so.
