When we recently visited the erstwhile Kakhovka dam site we learned many locals who lived along its banks and depended upon it for sustenance were hoping not to rebuild the old Soviet-era dam, but create a series of smaller, more environmentally friendly dams and waterways.
A detailed argument to not rebuild Ukraine's Kakhovka dam but to restore the historic Great Meadow, a unique territory flooded in the 1950s. In the coming years, the reservoir bed will "become the largest wilderness area in Ukraine's steppe zone."
