Wowser! We're officially five years old today. A big thank you to EVERYONE who has been part of the journey so far. Over the next few months we will try and spotlight some of those that have made Storymix and our mission to centre kids of colour in stories full of joy adventure, and be a launchpad for talent from racially marginalized backgrounds possible. But until then some Saturday stats for you about businesses. Almost 50% of businesses have to close in their first five years of trading in the UK. 15% of small businesses are owned/founded by a woman in the UK. Black-led employers make up just 0.1% of UK small and medium sized businesses. For context these are all numbers from studies in 2023. It was by no means a guarantee that we would be here in 2024 after launching at London Book Fair in 2019. What are you going to do differently? What are you willing to give up? What are you willing to change? 📣 Publishing folk, are we listening? The #ReflectingRealities 2023 report is out, and the numbers are a hard read: 📉 17% of UK kids’ books featured racially minoritised characters (down from 30% in 2022). 📉 7% had racially minoritised main characters (halved from 14%). This isn’t just disappointing—it’s a wake-up call. Our founder @JRichardsAuthor challenged the industry at @_thebookseller children’s conference to be braver and create space for bold, joyful stories that centre all kids—not just as a trend but as a true commitment.
