I'm equally disappointed by programs that have IMG as part of their leadership and don't adequately support IMG trainees and IMG that make it to leadership positions and automatically forget where they come from.
Assimilation doesn't help anyone but the oppressor.
Thank you to all IMGs practicing in the US. Even when you don't feel appreciated, your work is important and you are making a difference in people lives around you.
"I really thought residency was going to be the hardest thing about my professional career but navigating immigration/visa issue has been my biggest stressor. I feel no matter what I do or how accomplished I am being a foreigner is a red flag across my face that I can't wash off"
"I used to get really upset when I got a question wrong while I was studying until I realized that is exactly the purpose of studying, figuring out what I don't know as well as I should. Honestly, a lot better to get it wrong in the study session than in the real thing"

Every rejection is the opportunity to not waste your time with a program that currently does not align with your needs and skills. Remember, all you need is one interview.

The Conrad program is the main avenue for IMG to free themselves from the shackles of the J1 visa. Every year there are 30 total spots per state. THIRTY. IN TOTAL.
House hearing today on "The Role of Immigrant Physicians in the U.S. Healthcare System" began with passionate remarks from Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) on the backlog of visas for IMG physicians and the importance the Conrad 30 program.

Internal medicine has about 10k spots every year, twice the amount of FM, three times that of EM and almost 5 times more than any other specialty. Most people seem to purse IM because most people pursue IM.

Not a sign of holistic review. Holistic review would not state a cut off. It shows programs do not update their webpages and that the information in the webpages is used to deter a subset of applicants from applying.
@kia_bashiri
Everyone has a right to be wrong. Data shows the opposite and clearly the PD is not interested in reading past their bias.
They just saved you one program to apply to.

You were invited to an interview because the program is interested. The fear of being undeserving should stop as soon as you get the first email inviting you for an interview.

The font that PS are printed by the programs is Courier New in a size 10. Writing your statement in this format will help you get an idea of how it will look once it’s received.

The goal of the PS is to get to know you. To pick up on some traits that are not evident on other areas of the application, like leadership, resiliency, growth, passion. Also as feeder for topics for the potential interview. It's a good way to break the ice.

Keep yourself busy. Understand there is not much you can do until that time. Plan your alternative early and then try to enjoy your time until match day.
Bake, ride a bike, read, travel with a mask...
I don't know the details of these horrific cases but practicing medicine away from your family and sometimes being a target of abuse and/or discrimination takes a psychological toll that it's usually never talked about. To everyone reading these lines, you are not alone.
First day of MED SCHOOL after burning 71% of my body 3 years ago. 28 surgeries and more to come, 20 days in a coma, 2 months in ICU, more than 7 months in the hospital, and 3 years of therapies.Happy to finally be here.
Less interviews means you are unable to stacked them in succession so of there is a long gap between them you have to stay in hotels for longer periods or just go back and forth between the US and home country.
Application to the Match can be very expensive depending on how many programs you are applying to. Changes of matching tend to be lower for non US IMG so many recur to applying to many more programs.
I love the optimism. I just hoped this was closer to reality. It matters where you graduated and it matters where you did your training. However, I do agree that as long as you have good mentors and are ready to seize opportunities as they become available you can be a success.
In medicine, it doesn’t matter where you graduated from, or where did your training. As long as you have good mentors and grab opportunities with both hands, you can be a success.

Why is getting into residency in the US so important you are leaving your country/friends/family? How has your experience in a different country improve the care of our patients? What are you long term plans? What type of visa do you need/want?

I suggest you contact the programs directly before the open houses and inquire their position regarding IMGs. Many won't specifically say they will accept IMG. If they don't let me know, I'm happy to call them out on it.
"My dream is to apply for the USMLE and make it to Residency. However, my school is on the World Directory of Medical Schools, but no Sponsor Note. I've contacted my School's leadership and ECFMG with no success. I need to write directly to someone who can help me. Thanks you!"
I worry about her, in particular about her daughters and mental sanity. Yet, while carrying the weight of the world in her shoulders, she always finds a way to smile, crack a joke and offer her help to others.

Mention both. What can you bring to the table and what are you looking for in a program. Use examples.
'I have grit' ❌, 'I pushed myself through school while supporting your family✅.'
'I'm creative'❌, designed a vaccination campaign for my community ✅.

I've always believed it's appalling that we thank the physicians that come to train and treat our patients by making it extremely difficult to go back home and visit their family.
As the dust from the Match settles I wonder about the reasons why non-us IMG relocate for residency.
In my case, it was a very selfish reason. I did it because it was hard. Later that reason shifted to something more laudable but everyone has a different story. What's yours?

International medical students are special but I didn't think they were $4000 more special. I wonder why the discrepancy? Liability insurance?
@MargaretEllenJ2
How many img you have in your program? How many have graduated? Are IMG expected to do preliminary positions before being considered? What happens with those prelims after that year?how does the population you serve look like? Do your residents look like the patients you manage?
@nursariipek
This really aches my heart. Unfortunately it is a common issue. These rotations are often not a priority for programs and as a consequence there are multiple ways in which the process is exceptionally difficult for the applicants.
