im just a humble tech reporter begging for startups to add some sort of contact info ... press email ... form submission ... anything! ... to their website!
I'm now writing about AI for
@BusinessInsider
, with a focus on early-stage startups and the investors who fund them. (But, I'll continue to write stories about VC culture and the intersection of wellness + tech!)
I acknowledge that bosses have the right to withhold pay when we withhold our labor.
Last year, it took insider 2+ months to fix my paychecks after I got a raise.
When we walked out a few months ago, it took management six days to dock our pay stubs.
Really speaks volumes.
Working in journalism is constant fear that you’ll be laid off, and near constant sadness that colleagues and industry peers have lost their jobs.
Sending lots of love to my BI coworkers today.
Hiya! I’m looking for startup founders who have opted for bootstrapping or another alternative means of funding outside of a traditional VC-backed round. Who should I talk to? (Any industry is fine!) sstokes
@insider
.com 🙏🚀💫
Omg — pr people please never pitch me a story three times in a row (it’s been happening a lot recently which is wild!). A follow up is fine, but if you’re emailing me 3+ times (I think the most I’ve received for one pitch is 7 follow ups😬), you’re going in spam time out
It took three pitches to get a TechCrunch reporter to interview a client for a piece.
It took two hours of media training to prepare the client for the interview.
It took a minute of the client dodging questions and forcing their own product as the solution to kill the piece.
there are so many vc backed men's clothing startups, but where's the vc backed women's white turtleneck that's resistant to makeup stains ??????????????
Hiya! I only take pitches by email (sstokes
@businessinsider
.com). If you're in PR -- please don't DM me here or on Instagram, Signal, or via text messages.
It’s my first day
@businessinsider
as their new professional services reporter! I’m now covering consulting firms like McKinsey, accounting firms like EY and more. Tips/story ideas/memes now go here -> sstokes

New: I'm now on
@TechInsider
's VC and startups team, where I'll be covering everything related to health tech and mental health tech. It's been a wonderful year and a half on Insider's finance team, and I'm really excited to take on this new role.
Hi! It’s day 11 of
@InsiderUnion
being ON STRIKE. You know what that means — NO CLICKS, NO LINKS, NO TRAFFIC to insider dot com. Don’t cross our digital picket line!
If you work in PR/tech/finance and like to see your stories in Insider, you should email company leadership to let them know you’d like our contract to be resolved so reporters can get back to work. Unfortunately, I can’t do any journalism until this gets resolved.
I woke up this morning so excited to get back to work. After 13 days being on strike,
@InsiderUnion
won a tentative agreement on an industry-leading contract. It’s been tough every step of the way, but I’m endlessly thankful to my colleagues for holding the line. 💙💙💙
I'll be at NYC Summit next week!! I love attending startup conferences right in my backyard :) If you're going to be there, drop me a line and say hi! Always looking to chat with VCs who can talk about the current state of the market, and healthtech founders building cool things.
I had an absolute blast on Wednesday hosting 130+ journalists for an evening of networking. The vibes were very great and were going to have another party soon!!
Folks in New York — I’m looking for some new go-tos for source meetings. Which coffee shops are spacious enough to actually sit down and have a convo (And have reliably open seats)?
.
@InsiderUnion
strike day 6 has wrapped.
Management did not come to the table today — despite a company wide email from them yday saying that “we hope to spend more time at the bargaining table and remain open and available to meet with the union to work through this.”
🤔🧐😶
I’m in
@CJR
this morning talking about my upcoming journalism party and lamenting the death of the New York media scene (monthly magazine drinks and a boozy softball league?!)
Check it out here -
So exciting to be posting a
#journorequest
again :)
I'm researching VCs who have medical degrees, and I need more women on my list!
Which female MD-VCs should I get to know?
It’s day 7 of being on strike with
@InsiderUnion
.
Our bosses often talking about aspiring to be like the NYT.
NYT management were able to reach a fair contract without the union having to go on strike.
@nichcarlson
@hblodget
now there’s something to aspire to!
if ur a pr person trying to rsvp for this, please don't 😭 im not accepting you (this is for media workers to connect with each other, not get pitched!!) and im also probably going to ignore your next email
I’m co-hosting a freelance mixer on Thursday and we still have a few open spots! If you’re curious about life beyond a traditional newsroom job or were laid off recently, this should be a great opportunity to meet others ->
Hello! I am shifting my focus at
@businessinsider
to cover more legal stories, with a focus on how the industry is changing and the intersection of law firms and professional services firms. Pitch me and send me tips: sstokes

Runners: does running feel good for you right now? I have some good days, but more often than not an "easy" 30 minutes is fatiguing and more of a slog/weird obligation than satisfying. Are you crushing workouts right now? Overall doing fine? If so, how?
@CitiusMag
@RunnersOfNYC
IM ON STRIKE.
Management — settle our contract fairly. It’s long overdue. You’d rather have us *not work* than settle an illegal healthcare change and meet us on modest wage increases? Couldn’t be me.
Until further notice, see you on the picket line.
It's official: THE INSIDER UNION IS ON STRIKE.
Management failed to agree on a fair contract that settles our healthcare ULP and pays us what we're worth. Starting now, over 250 Insider employees are on indefinite strike.
You want us back
@thisisinsider
? Settle the contract. ✊
The time stamp on one of my stories was refreshed today, giving the appearance that it was just published.
Like most of my union colleagues, I walked out to protest the recent proposed layoffs. I did not cross the picket line.
My biggest beef with Columbia is that they encouraged highly ! Qualified ! Journalists! With masters degrees! To do internships !
Internships are incredible learning opportunities. They also gatekeep women/poc/poor folks from sustainable jobs/careers in the industry.
Internship applications for next year are opening and I have to stop my imposter syndrome from applying and remind myself that I’m ready for a *job*. I am qualified, I have four internships and a masters degree under my belt, I am qualified for a decent job.
It’s day 8 (!) of the
@InsiderUnion
strike and we still haven’t received a counter proposal from management — despite providing our last counter to them on Tuesday night and being ready and willing to bargain ever since.
This could have been wrapped up a long time ago, Insider.
It’s my last day at
@AmericanLawyer
! I’m so grateful for my time here - as an early career business journalist, I was given many opportunities to grow as a reporter and tackle big and interesting stories. The newsroom is filled with wonderful people I’ll miss tremendously.
what's the etiquette when it comes to chatGPT? I've been phrasing my requests as questions and throwing in please and thank yous because i'm hoping the robots will remember my kindness when they come alive to kill us
I had Covid about a month ago, and it wiped out like 2.5 years of pretty consistent training, which is nuts. Its not “oof my normal 5-mile route hurts” it’s “I’ve been jogging slowly for 4 minutes and I’m about to pass out.” And I was in pretty decent shape, just gone
There are more than 6 PR people to every journalist now, and incessant emails (often unrelated to me, my beat, and my publication) only add to the burnout in this profession and make you stand out in a bad way. Please do reporters a favor and spare their inboxes
There’s an incoming Columbia Journalism student with almost 100K followers on tiktok, and she just continually refills a giant glass snack jar, we have to stan
It’s day 13 of the
@insiderunion
strike — simultaneously in awe of my amazing colleagues who have held the line for nearly two weeks, and disappointed that management has kept us in this position for this long. Let’s get this contract wrapped up!
@annehelen
It can be helpful for me to break those long runs up into a few chunks — so for a 19 miler, i would try to think about it as a 6 warm up, water+snack+mental break, 8 mile run - maybe a little faster?, good break again, and then a 5 mile cool down
I'm looking to speak with Israeli startup founders who are thinking about their company's future in the country. If you're starting to think more about what that might look like, get in touch: sstokes

"It's going to be harder to bank as a startup going forward. Our industry has shot itself in the foot."
An absolutely brutal 24 hours for the tech industry that saw the failure of storied — and beloved — Silicon Vally Bank. More details on it's collapse:
It must be super cute and fun to log off from work and enjoy the weekend! I know
@nichcarlson
@hblodget
et al sure did — their reps told us they wouldn’t bargain over the weekend.
Meanwhile,
@InsiderUnion
has been holding the line for three days we’re not losing steam.
I was supposed to be enjoying a long weekend and using my hard-earned PTO to travel out of state for a wedding.
Instead, I’m taking this time unpaid (and will be spending a bunch of time monitoring my phone — not much of a vacation!) while on strike with
@InsiderUnion
.
After four grueling years of med school,
@GalymImanbayev
decided he didn't want to be a practicing doctor after all — he'd rather bring his skills to
@lightspeedvp
and join a small but mighty community of VCs using their MD to improve healthtech investing.
Insider leaders who haven’t come to the table in more than 2 years of bargaining (they have reps do their dirty work for them) are spending their time sending union-busting, company-wide emails filled with incorrect information.
Again, it *really* couldn’t be me.
Day 4 of being on strike with
@InsiderUnion
! I’m looking forward to an extra productive bargaining session today — company leaders declined to bring us any counterproposals on Friday or meet over the weekend, so I know they’re extra well rested from their break.
VC has historically been a boys club (surprise, surprise) but thankfully, women VCs are carving out a bigger space in the seed-investing world. Here's our list of the top 30 women with a proven track record in early-stage investing.
Executives at this company are absolutely obsessed with AI. It’s very silly! How about instead of this, get to the table and resolve our contract so I can get back to working on my *actually good* stories?
I was at a wedding out of state this weekend and still managed to be more involved on our ongoing strike and negotiations than
@BusinessInsider
management, whose reps left the bargaining table early on Friday and declined to do anything during the last few days 😶
Q2 just started, which is a good time to announce that I’m now on the Wall Street beat! 🤓 Earnings season is right around the corner, and I’ll be tackling the latest news on big banks with my many talented colleagues on the
@BusinessInsider
/
@FinanceInsider
team.
If journalism schools care about their students' career prospects once they graduate, they should start using their clout to push back against some of these corporate union-busting practices that are becoming commonplace. Stop inviting these companies to job fairs.

Last week, 172 of us emailed
@thisisinsider
management explaining why we need job security, pay equity, metrics reform, and other proposals our union made. Two days later, Insider's counsel told us they didn't read our emails. So today we made sure they can read them.
I stand with my
@InsiderUnion
who are truly working to get better every day! I'm calling on
@thisisinsider
management to productively and respectfully bargain with us to secure a fair contract. Let's get this done so we can focus all of our energy on doing great journalism.
Yesterday, our
@insiderunion
colleagues marched on global editor-in-chief
@nichcarlson
to demand he and other members of
@thisisinsider
management bargain with us about massive proposed changes to the newsroom.
How did we get here?
🧵A thread…
✊WE DID IT!✊
As of December 1st, our union members will no longer be disciplined for failure to meet arbitrary metric goals.
This is a monumental change for Insider, and a huge win for our journalists who are thrilled to keep producing phenomenal work.
Fun fact: I was fired from my summer res life job over sidewalk chalk and those little stick sparklers — I was sent to student conduct and found guilty of vandalism and having explosives (no i am not kidding).
This is absolutely nuts but not surprising.
This is a nightmare scenario for any journalist. I’m so sorry this happened,
@MeghanEMorris
and
@dariusrafieyan
.
Being on strike with management dragging their feet is bad enough, but this is a new level of horrific.
B/c
@insiderUnion
is on strike, I did not finish *drafting* this story, including reaching out to my normal comms channel for comment.
I'm horrified this story went out and urge you not to read it.
Sources tell me Insider’s editor in chief
@NichCarlson
is riding horses in Jackson Hole while
@InsiderUnion
employees are on strike.
Nich, get off the horse and tell your representatives at the bargaining table that we need a fair contract and a settlement to our healthcare ULP.
Day 6 of the
@InsiderUnion
strike! Y’day, management’s reps came to the bargaining table for less than 15mins, verbally insulted members of our bargaining committee and the Guild, and then hung up.
I’m proud to keep picketing with my colleagues (virtually due to NYC air quality)
BREAKING: Robinhood users are suing after it blocked purchases of GameStop and other highly volatile stocks. The suit alleges the firm's actions "manipulate the market for the benefit of people and financial intuitions who were not Robinhood’s customers"
NEW: the Silicon Valley Bank-induced stress continues for startup founders, with many now worried they won't be able to pay employees. "Making payroll next week is going to be a shitshow."

Does anyone else hate remote work? I’m normal times, I’d like it as an option and would take advantage sometimes! But I see so many people saying they never want to go back. At home I’m lonely, more easily distracted, and sometimes can’t fully disengage at the end of the day.
