I bought a car! Meet my new-to-me 1999 Mazda Miata 10th Anniversary Edition, no. 1,686 of 7,500. Bought it in Arizona with 27K miles on the odometer. I’ve had it for an hour and I’m already smitten. So stoked to have a convertible of my own, especially one as clean as this.
Also driving a Prodrive-modified Subaru WRX today at Millbrook. Power upgrade, wing from the P25, new wheels, new seats, chassis changes, bigger brakes, body-colored arches, and more. I’ll have more to say next week!
Some news!
I'm taking over leadership of the
@CNETCars
team this month. I love what we're doing at
@CNET
, and I'm excited to take the reins and shape our automotive coverage. Great stuff ahead!
Now that I’ve seen it in person, the Santa Fe is kind of A Lot, especially from the rear. But it’s still a mega improvement, and this color/wheel combo slaps.
The VinFast VF8 is a car that’s so overwhelmingly bad it should not be put on sale, yet you can go buy one right now. Anyone who says this EV is good is lying. This is the worst new car I’ve tested in ages.
Some people have been ragging on the Civic Si recently and I don’t get why. It’s so charming. One of the most fun new cars you can get for less than $30K.
New job alert! 🚨 In a couple of weeks, I'll be joining the crew at
@Edmunds
as Director, Editorial Content. I've had a lot of fun freelancing for the past year, but I've really missed being part of a team. Now, I'll be working with one of the best. Stoked!
So, CT4 Blackwing. It’s good. Super good. The interior has the usual cheapo GM problems but hot damn is it good to drive. Best Cadillac I’ve driven in a long time.
This is the electric
@MercedesBenz
EQC. You’ll see it at CES in January, but I’m hanging out with it in California today. Full story on
@roadshow
next week.
Still can’t talk about the M2 yet, but boy am I glad to be driving it on my home roads. Also, the design is growing on me. Kinda. Maybe it’s just because this color super slaps.
Only thing hotter than the ambient temperature in Los Angeles this weekend is the Sonoma Green hue of my
@Audi
RS5 test car.
Best new car color of 2018, right here.

🚨 Some news! 🚨
Oct. 21 will be my last day at CNET. It's been a fun 4.5 years, but I'm ready for a new adventure. What's next? No clue! I'm up for freelance, full-time, whatever. DMs are open, email is steven.j.ewing

.com. Here's a pic of me looking forward to the future.
Also! I’m stoked to announce that I’m now
@BBC_TopGear
mag’s official US Correspondent. It’s a permalance/retainer gig that’ll have me making regular weekly contributions geared toward US readers while still allowing me to write for other publications. It’s gonna be rad!
I’ll never understand why people hate on manuals with auto rev-matching. Yeah, I know how to heel-and-toe shift, but the Civic Si’s tech does it quicker and smoother, and it really makes city driving so much nicer. You can turn it off if you want, but why would you?
I really like driving this Chevy Colorado Trail Boss, but basing this model on the Work Truck was a mistake. This one’s $41K and doesn’t have HID headlights or a telescoping steering wheel — stuff that’s standard on a $25K Ford Maverick — and the base interior feels super cheap.
I am constantly amazed that people are shocked when they learn that so many car enthusiasts are very pro public transportation and city decongestion initiatives. Driving and dealing with cars in city centers sucks. That’s something we can all agree on.
Tesla is restarting production today against Alameda County rules. I will be on the line with everyone else. If anyone is arrested, I ask that it only be me.
Never mind the fact that the 150-kW Electrify America charger I’m plugged into is only delivering 72 kW. Someone actually bought a pink Taycan Cross Turismo!
While hand-washing the Mini just now, a neighbor walked by and said, “Giving it a good old fashioned hand job, huh?” I paused. He paused. And then he walked away going, “Aghhhhhhh!”
Happy weekend!
