A 200,000 acre 10,000 head cattle ranch for sale in one of the most picturesque States… Alaska.
Rounding up the herd with helicopters while a volcano is looming in the background would be interesting. Instead of semis and cattle pots, you load directly onto carrier ships.
You know those small town hole in the wall restaurants where people call you by name, the interior hasn’t changed in decades, a ‘slice’ of pie is 1/3 of the pie, and the 8 things on the menu are all cooked with grease while costing less than $10?
Those are the best restaurants.
Small town welding and fabrication shops are extremely underrated. What some of them can do with an idea, metal, and the right tools in their hands, truly is an art form.
I come from a family of workaholics. Consequently, unless I physically travel somewhere else, I struggle with relaxing & occasionally feel like I’m wasting time if I’m not being productive.
I admire people who are able to truly rest without feeling bored, anxious or unproductive
A year ago today I texted a girl in our town that multiple people said I should get to know and take on a date.
She replied that she was going to be busy for a little bit but would get back to me as soon as she was able.
Must’ve been a busy year, I’m still waiting to hear back.
I feel so judged by roadside rumble strips. I’m really not that bad of a driver, I just enjoy looking at crops, cows, and farms along the way more than I enjoy looking at the road.
A guy come up to me at church profusely thanking me for allowing him to ride along during harvest. He was so excited he could barely talk.
I realized maximizing harvest efficiency is pointless if stopping a few minutes to let someone come ride can add so much joy to their life.
I don’t know who needs to see this, but the picture on the left is a picture of an auger wagon and the picture on the right is a picture of a grain cart.
Hopefully this prevents confusion in the future. 👍
Working near a landlord’s AirBNB today. Young family staying there came out to say hi. Ended up walking through a corn field for 15 mins teaching the kids about growing corn, counting ear size, & weeds we deal with.
5 yr old gave me a pop as a Thank You. Highlight of my week.😎
My hometown has recently completed several murals in and around our downtown district. I am amazed by how well some of them have turned out. Small towns are awesome.
Noticed sporadic chemical jugs in the road ditch. It was bothering me so I started picking them up. Found all these in a 6 mile stretch.
Doesn’t matter whose they are, it makes anyone who uses chemical look bad when folks can’t keep empty jugs from flying off a tender truck.
Why is running equipment 24 hours a day so uncommon in production Ag?
One $350k tractor (work day & night) at 1,000 hrs a year or 2 $350k tractors (Work just day) at 500 hours a year.
Variable costs are the same.
Fixed cost is doubled.
Want to cut costs, start with equipment.
My sister is bringing her city slicker boyfriend from college to the farm this weekend to meet the family.
She specifically asked me to keep my ‘hickness’ at a minimum.
If he doesn’t drink sweet tea, likes my coveralls, or is ok with livestock smell, they shouldn’t be dating!
Had a guy from church ask me to help him on their farm when I’m not home for the weekend on ours. He has two daughters close to my age I knew from college and one of them is single...
Is think my life might turn into a country song...
Talked to a family friend tonight and he said he set an average yield goal for his farm. (200bu corn, 60bu beans) If hit, he’d take all his employees on a paid for vacation.
They finally got it after multiple years striving and he followed through with his end of the deal.
Dad’s pickup. He got it used in 2012 with 50k miles. He has hit 11 deer with it. My sister drove it into a tractor. He could easily afford a new one, he rather buy more land or pay down debt.
Unlike the ‘Jones’s’, he doesn’t think a newer nicer vehicle represents success.
Small town hole-in-the-wall restaurants and cafes are the best places to eat.
Sometimes I wonder if they pass health code...
Then I realize if I cared about my health I wouldn’t be indulging in a 3/4lb double bacon cheeseburger, greasy fries, & a massive piece of homemade pie.
I feel bad for the folks who are only grain farmers, can’t use the excuse, “I gotta go do livestock chores!” When you’ve had enough time with family during the holidays.
I’ve never met my paternal Grandpa. He died after slipping doing chores & getting pulled in a PTO.
Dad & Uncles were kids at the time & were the ones who found him. Only time I’ve seen them cry is talking about it.
Always in the back of my mind when around a PTO
#FarmSafetyweek
Hypothetically speaking, if a grain bin was built last spring for $3 bu and filled with 2021 crop, most of those crops would’ve paid for either all of it or a majority of it by this spring.
Not many assets pay for themselves in a single use.
For a multigenerational family business, would you push or encourage the next generation to work outside of the business for a few years to experience a non-family work environment before they can be employed in the business full time?
Farmers are weird. You could show them a way to save/make tens of thousands of dollars more a year, but they would not do it if it means that have to change more than 10-15% of their daily practices.
Same thing could be said elsewhere too...
Humans like the status quo too much.
The Koch family, one of the largest landowners in Kansas, have listed a ranch located in the Flint Hills for sale. As one of the prettiest areas in our State, $23.3M is all it takes to call the nearly 10,800 acres of pasture and ranch infrastructure home.
My Brother has never shown an interest in the family farm & works for another community business, but once in awhile he will help move equipment. Listening to him say equipment numbers gives me a good chuckle, ‘Are we here to get that four thousand four hundred & thirty tractor?’
My cousin sent me these pictures of the bed he finished building for his sons inviting me over to come check it out sometime. The bunk bed I had with my brother growing up with never this cool....
The header he made is incredible.

*Family lunch after church*
Dad - have you looked at your beans lately?
Me - Yea I walked them a week ago.
Dad - They are doing amazing. Early planted beans like yours are going to be great this year!
I may be a grown man, but getting Dads approval still makes me happy inside
I have technology on my phone to see where 1 seed in millions got miss planted, know within pounds how much grain got harvested in 100 acre fields, & can push prescription maps through the cloud to equipment miles away...
but uh, does anyone know where I can photocopy something?
I think an old timer with a thousand acres or so of quality paid for ground is more impressive than another guy who is farming 10x that much with the majority of it being rented. But maybe that’s just me...
Have you ever found yourself thinking so hard while driving you suddenly realize the radio has been off for the last 15-20 miles and you didn’t even notice?
Found this slide I saved from almost 2 years ago after attending a lecture Dr David Kohl gave.
Tons of intriguing points. Seems like unspoken expectations is an underlying theme in many of them.
Got this auger a few weeks ago & Dad was complaining about not getting it to work. Turns out he didn’t have the right software update on his phone to get it to work with bluetooth connection.
Unable to use an auger because of a software update, what a time to be alive😳

Invited Grandpa to ride along as we look at nothing important today.
In 2019 he battled 2 different forms of cancer, had a knee fail, & is still awaiting proper replacement. He hasn’t been out of the house much in the past year.
Figured getting out would mean the world to him.
Have you ever found yourself thinking so hard while driving you suddenly realize the radio has been off for the last 15-20 miles and you didn’t even notice?
Reckon it’s time to make it Twitter official since that’s how I met

I wasn’t even playing cards, but I managed to pull a Queen, a

that is. While she is riding buddy seat I’m realizing how little I actually know about growing corn…
I may be in my 20s, but whenever I see a kid with a toy tractor/combine, my 8 year old farm boy self comes out.
In that moment I want nothing more than to rub holes in my pants carpet farming with them.
I was texting one of my best friends and I asked if she would ever bring me fried chicken when I’m in the tractor and then stay to ride for a bit.
Her reply, “That is so unhealthy! No.”
I guess there is a reason she is just a friend...
Honestly, I am just looking for a woman who will love me like a Nebraskan loves their Husker football.
20-30 years after peaking, taking losses every week, and people still cheering like they are in their heyday.
That’s true love right there.
Went & visited my 89 yr old grandma tonight...
‘Do you have a girl in your life yet?’
No grandma.
‘College is the best time to meet a girl you know, but you didn’t do that!’
I know...
‘I’m getting older everyday, sure hope you find one before I die!’
Thanks for the support.😒
I don’t think I could ever be a salesman. I’d get discouraged from constantly being told no and feeling like I am damaging a relationship if I push the subject any further.
I highly respect salesman who are a good at this process, even if I am the one constantly telling them no.
Call me crazy if you want, but a girl wearing work boots, an exhausted smile covered in mud, grease, and manure, with a ponytail sticking out of a seed hat, is more attractive to me than a super model wearing heels, pounds of makeup, and an outfit designed to accent her curves.🤷♂️
When it comes to grain marketing, some people forget to factor in the time value of money. They’re chasing more pennies on sale price while giving up dollars if the money was used sooner to pay down debt, prepay inputs, etc.
A high price isn’t a direct correlation to more profit
A good accountant is worth more than you’ll ever pay them.
A bad accountant will cost you more than you’ll ever pay them.
As a kid I never realized how valuable they actually are.
Huge problem facing the next generation of farmers isn’t access to internet like I’ve seen discussed lately.
Issue I see is starting capital it takes to profit the average income in the US. Sure it’s a lifestyle, but how will a young guy cash flow without outside income/support?
You finally have a break while grain carting. You open your lunch box & pull out your favorite Little Debbie snack you’ve been saving all day. As you unwrap it your mouth starts watering. While putting the wrapper to the side, the snack falls on the cab floor.
What do you do?
Equipment capacity (acres per year) is a metric I find interesting and intriguing in operations.
Last week someone told me “We have a 23 s780 for our 2200 acres.”
Know another farm covers 5000+ acres a year with a 2023 s780.
Also know 2200 acre farms with 15 year old combines.
Farmers are weird. You could show them a way to save/make tens of thousands of dollars more a year, but they would not do it if it means that have to change more than 10-15% of their daily practices.
Same thing could be said elsewhere...
ALL humans like the status quo too much.
Working with Dad occasionally irritates me when I don’t understand his decision making.
I try to slow down and remember he was a kid when his father died in a farm accident. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be in my shoes.
Suddenly things are less irritating with that in mind.
Had a friend tell me, ‘Dad is thinking about putting a big number 3 on the side of the combine just to get the neighbors talking and wondering where the other two are.’
#genius
Interesting how Youtube farmers can demo new machinery from major manufacturers even though they admit there’s no place for it on their farm, but I hear operations who would & could use the equipment unable to get a chance to demo it.
Is marketing now more valuable than sales?
In the Midwest we have a unique way of naming farm animals.
Dogs get called; Hank, Duke, Buck, Rosco, Bo, Daisy, Sadie, Molly
Cats get called; Orange Cat, Grey Kitty, Tom Cat, Black Cat, Mama Cat, Dead Cat.
Huge problem facing the next generation of farmers is not long hours, lack of people wanting to do it, or lack of experience. It’s the cost of entry.
Startup cost it takes to profit the average income in the US is crazy. Sure it’s a lifestyle, but it’s an expensive one to live.
Talked to the local silage cutters wife at the grocery store for a bit.
She said church has been a struggle because she won’t let their sons bring toy tractors to service anymore, ‘They use phrases their Dad uses when equipment breaks down in the middle of the sermon.’ 😂😂
Though being in my early 20s in 2019 is great, I kinda wish I was born 15-20 years earlier.
Being a young adult when Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, George Strait, Dixie Chicks, Brooks & Dunn, Faith Hill, and early Tim McGraw ruled country radio would make concerts more appealing.
For 8 years I’ve wanted to drive the Appalachian Mtns in the fall to see all the colors.
Last week I did just that. Rented a loaded 2020 Ram 1500 with unlimited milage for a total of $377.64.
I put nearly 3,800 miles on it in a week. Somebody lost money on this transaction...🤔
Young farmers who are humble, ambitious, & hungry to learn more, while wanting a diversified operation have a leg up on those stuck in more conventional ways.
These guys easily pivot to new options & are fine with being odd man out if it means they survive to fight another day.
Still figuring out this grain drying thing. Lots of issues so far
Some said 110k bu ‘wet’ bin would be too big, but combines can go all week & not worry about filling it. By Saturday night it’s full enough to go until Monday morning when we start again.
Ominous looking at night
Everyone is a trader.
Some trade time for a paycheck.
Some trade risk for profits.
Some trade happiness for security.
Some trade failure for wisdom.
Some trade ethics for cash.
Some trade their future for a temporary high.
Be careful what you are trading for.
Found an antique in an old shed. I don’t think I know how to operate it anymore.
I remember first getting them and sitting in the combine amazed at technology and the information on it... if I only knew how

would be 20 years later. 😳
Had a trick-or-treater come dressed as a self propelled sprayer and his sister was a crop duster. Their Mom said I was the first person who was able to guess what he was without asking.
Needless to say, they both got extra candy even if he was being a red sprayer.
Note to future wife, you must be fine with;
• Romantic tractor dates
• Slow dancing to 90s country in the kitchen
• Driving through an equipment dealers lot when we see one
• Wildflower bouquets
• My Mac & cheese fetish
• Sunday’s filled with Church & backroad driving
Forget the politics around the Thanksgiving table debate, the ‘How many acres you guys farming now?’ question from a cousin in-law was the most uncomfortable topic of the day. 😬
Moving tractors with Dad and he asked me where I moved a bunch of hay he was planning of feeding the cows.
I never touched them.
Come to find out a neighbor took 170 bales and sold them. Said he has the money to pay for them - most likely not.
Dad was LIVID when he found out!
Me - “why does the gator I normally drive have a broken windshield?”
Dad - “well I was trying to get some cows back in last week and didn’t see a ditch. My head hit the windshield.”
Me - “Oh.... 😐”
That’s 2 windshields he has broken with his head now...
For Halloween I’m going to drive around in a new white pickup, show up to a field to ride with my cousin at the worse possible time, then talk to him about variety changes he could make for next year while he is trying to focus on harvest logistics.
I’m going as a seed salesman.
The massive increase of input prices for the 2022 growing year is going to be a real kick in the gut resulting in major effects on producers decision making we don’t fully realize at this time.

I would like to add an amendment to Murphy’s Law; Not only will everything go wrong that can go wrong, it will also go wrong next to the main highway for everyone to see.
I was informed that a parts run to a store 2 counties over and stopping at Dairy Queen on the way home isn’t considered a sophisticated date....
A Sunday afternoon checking crops, livestock, or irrigation is still considered a good date though right? (Asking for a friend)
Zipped up after taking a leak & realized my wallet wasn’t in my back pocket. I covered a lot of ground & jumped multiple fences since last I knew I had it. It was getting dark after looking 45 mins so I gave up for the day & went back to my truck.
It was in my center console.🤦♂️
I pre-planned my entire trip so I would stay on backroads and get a chance to see views that I otherwise won’t see from the interstate or even certain state highways. I was not disappointed
Forget about the pros and cons of tillage, I’m just impressed if someone has enough labor to be working on both harvest and fall tillage at the same time!
With commodity prices up it’s important to keep a cliche management saying in mind; Our worst decisions are made during the best of times and our best decisions are made during the worst of times.
Grandpa has been fighting cancer this yr. With treatments affecting immunity he’s avoided public/outdoors. Last chemo was in August
Saturday I called with a small job; driving a truck from one field to another. Can’t remember last time I saw him feel so valued & excited to help.
