It is very weird when people working the humanities treat Marx’s Capital as a literary work that needs to be interpreted rather than a scientific contribution on the ongoing development of economic theory. That leads to confusing economic theory with history of economic thought.

Everyday Stalinism (5⭐) This should be required reading. Reinforced my view that one of the problems of the Soviet Union is that it was inadequately bureaucratic, people were living in a constant state of flux. Zero predictability. Not good if you want a planned economy.

Marx doesn’t have a notion of progress, and if he does, it’s a vestigial notion of progress that we shouldn’t really have any attachment to. Have you read Benjamin’s Theses on the Concept of History? “The storm is what is called ‘progress’.”

But it’s not even his theory. And when he tries to step outside of these boundaries, it’s mostly pragmatism. Like he didn’t theorise why he was insanely wrong on the military and militias, he just does what makes sense (and succeeds).

The height of the work on Hegel was at the late 60's. There were many books and articles, much debate. It was created by the 1967 anniversary for the 100 years of Marx's Capital. Many collective tomes and conferences happened at that decade.

Planning problems in the USSR (5⭐). Great book on the reform discussion from the 50s to the early 70s. Offers arguments why most reforms were not applied. In my opinion, this strand of thought remains the only viable for a socialist economy of some scale.
