We recently welcomed @ScotGovFM , @JohnSwinney MSP to officially open our new Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery Control Centre at our headquarters in Perth. The new control centre, designed with the feedback of operational colleagues at its core, will enhance our operational facilities in support of expected future growth in our onshore wind, solar and battery portfolio. With over 800MW of onshore renewable in construction across the UK and Ireland, as well as almost 2.5GW already in operation, the new control centre is an important investment in enabling safe and efficient management of existing and future operations. Watch the video below to learn how the control centre will be beneficial.

Our Managing Director Stephen Wheeler, gave a keynote address at @WindEnergyIRL's Annual Conference in Dublin recently. In his address he spoke about taking big leaps and not small steps for climate action, and that the best leaders leave a legacy, ours being the planet. At SSE plc we’re taking on climate change and building the renewable energy infrastructure needed, including the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank. It’s a project of globally significant scale and when complete, it will generate 3.6GW of renewable energy from the North Sea, powering 6 million homes annually. Putting this into global context, the world needs 2,000 Dogger Banks between now and 2030 to fight the climate and nature crisis. In the video below Stephen outlines the positives of Ireland’s onshore wind generation which has formed the backbone of the country’s energy system. However, it’s been over 20 years since Ireland has seen a MW of offshore wind developed. The time for action is now, and it starts with our political leaders, working with industry and stakeholders. Now is the time to turn our small steps into big leaps for climate action.

Project Director for our Berwick Bank project, Alex Meredith, took part in the final session of day one at the @ScotRenew Offshore Wind Conference. Alex addressed the conference and delivered an update on the scale of opportunity that the 4.1. GW Berwick Bank can provide for the offshore wind supply chain and wider UK economy. Berwick Bank Wind Farm represents a potential £8.3 billion boost to the UK economy should the project get the green light from the Scottish Government and would play a crucial role in achieving the UK Governments Clean Power 2030 mission. #SROFFSHORE25

We’re back again at the @ScotRenew Offshore Wind Conference in Glasgow as headline sponsor. The two-day event is underway, with Brian McFarlane, our Head of Offshore Development, UK, taking part in the first discussion of the day. Chaired by @ScotRenew Chief Executive, @renewableclaire, the session explored the need to push boundaries in order to help drive the projects that will contribute towards the UK and Scottish Governments’ ambitious 2030 #offshorewind targets. Brian touched on the need to accelerate the consent process for offshore wind projects, and why the UK Government needs to set an ambitious CfD Auction Round 7, and listen to industry concerns on REMA. #SROFFSHORE25

The @ScotGovFM @JohnSwinney MSP officially opened our new Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery Control Centre today in Perth 🥳 It comes after our onshore wind, solar and battery operating portfolio grew last year to almost 2.5GW, following the completion of our 443MW Viking Wind Farm in Shetland and our 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Salisbury which both entered commercial operations in 2024. With over 800MW of onshore renewables now in construction across the UK and Ireland, the new control centre is an important investment in enabling safe and efficient management of existing and future operations. Alastair Stephen spent over 25 years at SSE plc working tirelessly to resolve challenges and mitigate impacts of hydro generation on Atlantic Salmon. He has been the driving force for fisheries science, management and education in Scotland for the past 40 years. 🐟 Following his retirement, his hard work across the industry was recognised at the Nature of Scotland Awards late last year, where he received the RSPB Species Champion Award. 🏆 Alastair has left a legacy of innovative partnership restoration projects, many of which are delivering real population level increases in some Scottish rivers. 💧 The video below, which was created for the Nature of Scotland Awards ceremony, shines a light on Alastair’s passion and the impact his work has had on Atlantic Salmon, nature and biodiversity across Scotland.

2024 was a busy year for us as we continue to champion the clean, secure and homegrown energy needed to support a net zero future. Huge milestones were achieved – we progressed flagship projects and crossed the finish line on two new onshore wind farms; we charged ahead with new battery projects; we completed significant redevelopments to some of our existing assets; and we continued our international expansion beyond our core market focus of the UK and Ireland. Some of our highlights include: 🍃 First full year of operations at Seagreen, Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm ⚡ Full commercial operations at Viking Wind Farm in Shetland and Lenalea in County Donegal 🚧 Construction progress continued at the 3.6GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm ⛰️ £100 million exploratory works at Coire Glas were completed 💧 Tummel Bridge Power Station reopened following £50 million refurb programme 🔋 Our first Battery Energy Storage System project at Salisbury went live ⚡ First power reached at Yellow River Wind Farm in County Offaly 🇫🇷 First power achieved at Chaintrix Wind Farm, our first onshore wind farm outside the UK and Ireland, and first from our Southern Europe Portfolio 🇳🇱 Our IJmuiden Ver Alpha Dutch offshore project in the Netherlands took a big development step forward 👏 FID to proceed with 208MW Strathy South onshore wind farm in the Scottish Highlands 🤝 £10.3 million invested in communities across Great Britan and Ireland With the addition this year of new operational assets to our portfolio, we now have 5GW of installed renewable capacity and we’re committed to delivering up to 9GW by 2027 as part of SSE plc’s £20bn clean energy NZAP Plus plan. We won't be stopping anytime soon. Thanks to all our SSE team and colleagues and to our partners, contractors and sub-contractors for their contributions throughout 2024. 2025 is shaping up to be just as busy! We have taken a final investment decision to proceed with the construction of our 208MW Strathy South onshore wind farm in the Scottish Highlands. Development of Strathy South Wind Farm, which is located in north-east Sutherland, has been ongoing for over a decade and once completed, it will be capable of powering around 200,000 homes annually with renewable energy. @Vestas will supply, install and commission the 35 V162-6.2 MW turbines for the project. Main construction works will begin in spring 2025, with commercial operations expected in late 2027. Read more 👇
